Minecraft

Oh well. Just let me know when someone finds a seed that puts me on an island or something.

If it existed, I'm sure it would be. :p

Just suffered a terrible couple of days. Got lava'ed while mining (and after I had picked up diamonds!), slaughtered by cave spider poison while exploring a mineshaft, and then apparently creepers can spawn in my house. They weren't able to before the last update, so I think the lighting/spawn rules have changed a little bit. Or they can walk through glass panes like they aren't even there.

Spit out torches like no tomorrow.

^and what if you cannot get any torches like me because there are only two miniature coal veins?

Can you make torches with charcoal?

If you keep digging, you will find it. I've taken out only 20ish diamonds (would have been 26 if I didn't burn to death after collecting some), a little more gold, but tons of redstone, iron, and coal.

Yes you can make torches with charcoal.

I can't keep digging, I have no torches :p

Just burn some wood to make charcoal. Then make torches with charcoal, then start mining. It's no problem!

Back in the old days, you had to desperately find a cliff and hope there was coal. That was part of the fun! :D

Anyway, my new PC is just about put together. Now it just needs a new HD and DVD (my newer "old" HD/DVD apparently were the last IDEs to be sold...).

Here's hoping for higher framerates!

Old PC - 8-20 FPS (20-30 FPS in Minecraft Alpha, 3 seconds per frame in the rain in beta)
Family Laptop - 20-30 FPS

I can only guess at the FPS with the new PC. :)

I think I started playing around 1.5 or 1.6, so I missed out on the early experience. I've been really frustrated recently, but it couldn't compare to not having a basic necessity like coal.

Download MCNostalgia. You can see how In/InfDev was, and even play a nether prototype (it was a normal world with a redish sky and no grass, but had lava pools).

Maybe later. I have officially had my worst night yet on Minecraft and I need to take a break.

You know what would be nice? If the game displayed the coordinates where you last died.

Hello all. I’m a Minecraft noob, but digging it immensely. But I have a couple questions please:

How do you guys get that full map screen? I built a map, but it’s horrible and only shows where I’ve been, ect. Are your screenshots the same map, but you guys explored everywhere? (if so..holy cow)

Also, what do the different sounds mean? I know this would be tough to explain, but if you can at least list things that cause musical notes to play, that would help. Some of these make me think that something significant is happening… but I have no idea what. I know at least one probably has something to do with being in close proximity to an Enderpearl.. unless it was just a coincidence..

Oh, and wanted to know if there was a source for wood other than the obvious? My first couple starts, there were no trees for a days travel in any direction. What do you do in this situation?

TIA

There are mapping programs out there that also generate maps as standard computer images. I only know of come of the more complicated ones. The minecraft wiki is a good place for that information.

Just played some Minecraft with my new PC. It. Is. FAST!

Max settings gives about 220 FPS (120FPS when generating terrain).
Min settings (with MaxFPS) saw a 1006 FPS output!
Min settings without MaxFPS - 40 FPS.

The mouse wheel seems a little sensitive compared to my other one. Although, that could be 8 years worth of dust.

Maps in the game are frustrating--you have to visit areas to put them on your map, the map's center is wherever you first pull it out and look at it, so if you explore outside the bounds of that map it won't show up. And if you die, you have to recover it or you lose it. That has happened to me more times than I care to admit right now (and part of the reason why I've been having a few bad days).

So long as you can find at least one tree (and sometimes, you have to search for them), you can get saplings to replant trees. Generally, one small tree will give you 1-2 saplings, large trees will give you even more. If you don't have any trees, you can try mining for your wood (find an abandoned mineshaft, which typically have several wood plans and fences you can take).

Not sure what you mean about sounds. There are jukeboxes, but I'm not sure that's what you are looking for. You can hear your bones breaking when you fall now, and that freaks me out.
