I am looking for a good miniature wargaming system to get for myself and my 8 year old son. I am looking for a fantasy or steampunk setting. I don't believe I am going to get Warhammer because of the cost and complexity (remember, 8 year old boy playing also) so I am leaning towards Heroscape. I believe that Heroscape is similar to Warhammer but easier and geared to smaller sized battles. The thing from Warhammer that I think Heroscape is missing is the miniature painting aspect. Also, the base set for Heroscape is $40 retail while the Warhammer is $60.

Anyone have any other game systems that would be a good fit for my situation? Also, are there any good ones in the steampunk setting?

I used to wargame quite a bit, but mainly played WW2 stuff. I did also play quite a bit of Games Workshop's Lord of the Rings game though - it's a pretty good set of rules, less complex than Warhammer and somewhat better suited to smaller scale battles, though the cost is about the same. There are plenty of miniatures to paint. Might to be worth checking out if your son likes the Lord of the Rings. :)

buy 2nd hand save a ton of cash.

He definitely loves LOTR. I will have to look into that.

and 2nd hand is a good thing. :)

Warhammer/40k player here:D

I second the Lord Of The Rings as a good choice, it's Games Workshops 'gateway' game as such, meant for younger players:)

Thanks for chipping in. I am going to take some time and look for local stuff 'cause getting it shipped on eBay adds $10-15 bucks to the final cost.
