So I am playing as Washington and have the ability to produce Minutemen. The question is, I noticed that these troops have a free upgrade Drill 2 attack when these units are being produced.

Am I right about this or is this a bug? There are no barracks or armory in my city in question by the way.

Thanks!

Its one of the promotions that the unique unit gets. The b17 will get a free promotion against cities. All of the unique units get a bonus one way or another. Some by promotions, some by abillity, and some by strength. I suggest building as many as possible of units like the minutemen because they keep their promotions after being upgraded. Making them even better.

Thanks for the kind reply!

On top of the free Drill promotion, the Minutemen ability to ignore terrain movement cost is also kept when a unit upgrades. This can be very useful for late game Mechanized Infantry which can run through mountains, forests, and across rivers very quickly. Add to that the fact that the Blitz promotion is easier to come by because of the free Drill promotion, and you have fast moving units which can attack multiple times per turn! IMHO...one of the best UU in the game.

The "keeping certain upgrades when you promote" seems pretty stupid though. Especially egregious are the "+100% against mounted units" riflemen who used to be pikemen. What on earth is going on there?

Although come to think of it, pikemen getting +100% against cavalry who are armed with rifles is pretty stupid too. Cavalry should be classified the same as riflemen since that's basically what they are - riflemen who get on horses to move about from time to time.

Is there a resource/thread on Civ fanatics that outlines which units keep their promotions and which do not? Or do they all?

I have to disagree 100%. If a unit has a tradition of doing well against a certain type of unit that type of thinking would naturally continue even if their weapons are upgraded.

They keep them forever unless they die. If you can get a few strong troops early on and keep them alive the whole game, they will be super killers!! I had a few musketmen make it to the end of the game and they had 7+ promotions plus the other bonuses.

I think he meant when upgrading from one unit to another, how do you know which promotions will 'follow' and which won't? eg., Lancer -> AntiTank loses the sight. I would like to know where such a list exists myself. Would like to see a full upgrade tree schematic with upgrade costs also if that exists.
