Missing/corrupt .TXT or .GIF Files? They are all HERE.

If you are using Civ2 & have a missing, corrupt, or nonstandard .TXT or .GIF file, you can locate the ones you need in this Repository (Library), located here.

These files are often replaced by scenarios, or ruined by people changing them. When you play games like Democracy, most Successions, GOTMs, OCCs, and even NMCCs, you should be sure you are using the standard files. If possible, restore the original files from your own installation. But if you can't for some reason, you can use the .TXT and .GIFs from the Library.

Note: Don't bother to ask about having all game files, or even .EXEs posted.... if you need those replaced, then use a patch or re-install or restore from the backup which I'm sure everyone does on at least a weekly basis ;).

The originals aren't really necessary for OCC's or NMCC's ( No City Challenges? In any case, you'd better add the abbreviation NMCC to your "Common Civ Terms" thread! :p) are they? That is, except when you want to let them count for the hall of fame or so...

I'm not sure if it's "safe" to post in that thread yet, so here are some comments:
Did you check for matching files? I'd think most files would be the same for both versions, so there's no need to post everything twice... Then again, that's Thunderfall's problem, not mine. ;)

Could you perhaps remove your signature from your posts (those download posts anyway), that way it looks less "cluttered".

And if you aren't working on this already, you could replace that image in your first post with a table of links, directly linking to the download attachments. That'll save the people from having to browse through the thread.

But before you start thinking I'm only good at complaining... ;) Good idea! :goodjob:

The goal is for someone (anyone) to be able to check and/or replace any text & GIF file on short notice, e.g., people that have defective or deleted files don't wanna wait till (if) someone responds in Tech Support. The main thing that triggered me to take the time to do it was for our GOTMs, where several people have accidently had the wrong files. Now they can quickly get the right one, & get back to playing.

Altered GIF files generally don't matter when playing games, but incorrect rules.txt can easily ruin any comparison game, like OCC and NMCC. Imagin if all my units defended with 20, attacked with 30, and settlers ate zero food. It's important that everyone play with the same set of rules-influencing files ;).

I'm considering one or two other things for the Repository, which is why it's not quite time for post there. I think I'll give a link to this location for people to post, however :D.

I considered a lot of ways to do it, and in the end decided to group it by 2.42 and 5.4.0f, even if a file was equal, at the binary level. Most were not, though. This way, even a newbie can find what they are looking for without trying to figure out what version is equivilent, and what can safely interchange and what can not. Most people do not know the in and out aof these files as much as you and I, and probably most that do know this stuff would always back up their files ahead of time and presumably not need the Repository to begin with.

That is a good idea! I wonder if it can be done without getting the "edit" line on each post. I'll look at it later...

It is faster to scroll, since a link to the post must reload the whole page. The entries are alphabetical, as shown in the Table of Contents. The ToC is a .GIF, and shows more information, like file size and date, of the contents of the Repository.

Ideally, the whole thing would be a Web page. I PM'd Thunderfall last month asking if I could upload & store some HTML, and he hasn't gotten back, so instead I just use what's available (e.g., threads and posts) to do things like this.

So the answer is, given the constraints & maintainability issues, people will just have to scroll to the file they want. But that is better than people having to post, wait, and hope for a good reply/attachment.
