Missionaries and Barbarians

I am playing a 4-civ on a terra map. I am the first to reach the other continent. This is cool in itself, knowing that there will be nobody there but the barbs, who quickly killed my explorer about two turns after he got off the caravel. I have a missionary loaded in anoter caravel, and I am wondering two questions: 1) Will barbs attack missionaries if the see them out in the open? and 2) has anyone ever tried to send a missionary into a barb village to see if they will spread religiion to the barbs? I think that would be cool,
(and realistic) but I don't know if it will happen. I have read some oter posts about terra maps having huge barb cities in the 'New World' and was just wondering if anyone has tried this yet.

Dunno, but I agree with you - missionaries ought tobe able to convert the barbarians - even get them to fight for you against the "heathens"!

Barbarians are considered to always be at war with your civ. This means you can't enter their cities with any units. And, yes, they will attack and kill your missionary.

Will religion ever 'naturally' spread to a barb city?

I've tried sending a missionary into a barb city and you cannot enter it. The barbs did eventually attack and kill him. This was on Noble and he sat outside of their city for a handful of turns before they killed him. It was a free missionary that I got when I discovered one of the later religions.
