I'm looking for some music to place in my World War II mod. Preferably something from the era itself. Does anyone know where I can DL some free music that isn't copyrighted? Also, what are the copyright laws regarding a computer game mod? If the mod is freely distributed and I'm not trying to make a profit from it, can I use music posted to YouTube?

Thanks for any help you can give!

- Actually, the list goes on and on ... :crazyeye: ...

-Maybe more detail on what part of the game you want the music for?

Also: anything in the Public Domain (which IIRC includes anything <=1945) should be perfectly OK to use.

(BTW I just ran "ww2 music" through Google to get these, and there are plenty more.)

Have Fun,

Sorry Oz. I didn't mean for you to go Googling for me. I was hoping someone knew of any free music archives off the top of their head. I have found some ww 2 radio archives but they don't have much in the way of music. :(

Mostly I'm curious about Youtube, I've found quite a bit of music from the period there but am not sure if I could use it or not without violating some sort of copyright laws. I probably should have named the subject line "Music from Youtube" or something.

It does not make any difference if Music is placed and distributed in a Free Game. IF Copyrighted and Not Free to use, it Violates the law.
Reason... if given out for free, people would not need to buy it and that infringes on the profits of the Music.

Generally, If music is posted for Public Domain, it is generally ok to use, However, I am not absolutely sure all posted on YouTube are ok but based on their policy, they should be.

Hey, what're friends for? :)

- And I'll keep it up. I think you're OK, but read at least the four numbered points on THIS PAGE.

And, really, fret not. I'm a researcher by nature. ;)

Best,

Oz

I sort of wonder if something like this would be "public domain". I can't imagine anyone selling these old tunes that giving them away free would infringe upon. Heck, whoever posted them to Youtube probably found them in a public archive somewhere.

Youtube’s policy is to remove anything that they get complaints about (because most of the stuff on Youtube contains some copyrighted material). Therefore just because it is on Youtube, doesn’t mean that it is public domain, but it is likely be safe (you might want to PM a mod about this)

Otherwise…

Any performance by any of the US military bands is public domain, although the songs may not be.

Check out the audio section of the Internet Archive

In the US anything published before ’64 is public domain, unless its copyright was renewed, which is basically impossible to determine.

Realistically anything that is period should be pragmatically okay, but you still might want to ask a mod about how strict the policy is regarding items whose copyright is indeterminate.

When you say WWII music, do you mean music that 'embodies' the warfare of the time (military marches, etc.), or music that was popular of the time?

Good question. Actually I mean both. So for instance I would like to use both military marches of the era and also whatever popular music I can find from the era. :)

I just wound up on YouTube by Googling, "Lili Marlene" and wound up with the lists you've probably seen. As a rule of thumb, I can't imagine anyone pressing for copyright infringement on anything either Hitler or Stalin tapped their feet to.

As Usual,

One good thing to do may to be just grab ww2 'ambience' music that has been in other WW2 games (and there are quite a few of those). Given if the same should likely go for game content that does for most everything else (someone explained that basically if you are not selling it, you can mod with it to an extent). But someone else may need to verify this, or an email to the company should give a yes/no answer.
