Hope this is the correct place to ask a few modding questions...Noob Modder here...
I am attempting to create an ancient era mod that depicts the transition from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic or in other words from hunting and gathering to farming...
1) Is it possible to earn Science without establishing a city?
2) Is it possible to make every civ and city state begin with a clan unit (rather than a settler) that can build an encampment (not a city) and use (and control) the mechanics used by a barb camp? (I would want them to pump out Hunter/Gatherer units instead of military units)

A friend of mine made the fantastic Prehistoric Mod a while back. He asked these same types of questions during development, but eventually decided to include cities because without them there was little for players to do...

That said, the answer to your questions:
1. You can change the research total each turn by however many increments you desire; requires lua.
2. Yes to the first part, which can be done with database changes only; yes to the second part, but will require lua.

Sorry for the long delay, and I appreciate your taking the time to answer my questions. My mod making abilities are still in its infancy. I hoped to create an atmosphere in the beginning of the game that allowed territory to be established before the rise of cities. There is another mod out there that allows a tile to be controlled by your civ if you fortify on that tile. It actually damages your unit after several turns, depicting the resistance of the unseen natives on that tile. I just had this (to me) really cool thought about a sort of pre-game skirmishes and or wars that dictated a peoples territory before you are given a settler unit...and then the game continues as normal. I just feel this would make the start more interesting and more challenging. Do you know of anybody in this community that would work with me on this mod, or at least point me in the right direction?
