Still in the top 200!!
I notice in the thread "help a poor right winger understand" that AoA kind of pre-empted any flamers with a threat of banning if anything along those lines appeared.

Now, I think thats a good thing for a thread like that as it stops it degenerating into predictable insults etc and promotes a good debate.

My query is - can such protection be "requested" in the future if you are planning a similar "risky" thread or is it purely down to the mod to decide if they want to do something like that? Might the mods look kindly on such a request in the future if they wont go as far as to say a definate "yes" now?

It should be implied in ALL threads, but lately, some new people were going a bit far, so that leaves two choices:

Saying something first, or a ban spree.

I use BOTH.

In theory, all threads are subject to the same statement AoA made. I think he was just anticipating, from experience, what would have happened... and then withthe warning, there is just no way someone can say they did not know already, if they get out of hand :D.

Nothing new on the rule; just a premptive REMINDER by AoA. He is a bear on flamming, and most particulalrly on trolling.

What a disappointing thread. I was hoping for something like:

Chez Rodgers, Thursday 10am.
Lefty: "Nice place you've got here Mr Rodgers. It would be a real shame if someone was to come along and burn it to the ground."
Rodgers: "Er yes, it would be a shame."
Lefty: "I thought so. Now if we were to come to some kind of arrangement that would ensure that nothing like that happened for the next month wouldn't the world be a nicer place?"
Rodgers: "How much do you want?"
Lefty: "I think that $200 would provide adequate insurance against damage for a month but with the economic climate as it is then that figure might prove to be wildy inaccurate in the future."
Rodgers: "You're taking the food off my table but here, here."
[Large amounts of cash change hands]
Lefty: "You have been most understanding - it is always a pleasure doing business with such an enlightened soul as yourself Mr Rodgers." [Puts fedora back on with a rakish tilt and strolls out with a jaunty stride]
[Rodgers slumps into a chair but there's another knock on the door]
Gonzo: "Why hello Mr Rodgers".......

Still, I don't reckon that specific threads need mod protection. If you think that someone is trying to start a flame war in your thread or trying to threadjack then just tell them to stop and ask one of the appropriate mods to deal with them.

I think it also helped that Switch made a very good effort at diplomacy at the start of his thread. He made it very clear that it was not a witty dig thread, which are normally either allowed, or tolerated when it comes to politics. I would expect that AoA just wanted to make it clear that the thread starters wishes should be respected in future posts. Even if that wasn't what passed through his mind, I think it is a good idea. :)

I wear couple other style hats, not a fedora. However I did have a formal fedora some years ago, along with a a very nice top coat, to wear over my tuxedo.

.....and my brother an I do sometimes refer to ourselves as Disadale and Doug.

Nice post duke! I finally made it into some screenplay, if even only a short part :D

But to everyone, if you need a moderator warning put into your thread please send 10 USD to every staff member. Or you could just ask if you think the thread might become off topic. ;)
