modify units and mountains..

Wasn't sure just where to put this, but I have 2 questions. I just started with Civ4 from Civ1 and 3.

1. Is it possible to modify or create a new unit with new or altered abilities? For example, a transport able to carry 6 instead of 4 units that would come available later in the game.

2. Mountains. To my surprise, the mountains in Civ4 aren't passable. Is it possible to alter that in the game? Also, is it possible to create a unit (or alter workers), to make a road through a mountain, but not make it "easy", maybe taking 2 or 3 times as long?

It seems to me to be not very realistic to have impassable mountains for the whole game.
