Yeah I just wondered that myself. I just bought the Gold Upgrade and BNW on steam and found out about this whole "mods work in multiplayer now" via this thread just a day ago and am excited as can be because I can finally play mods with my friends.
However, while a lot of mods have that aforementioned line "Worksinmultiplayer = 1", the multiplayer button doesn't seem to show ever (it isn't greyed out, it's just not even there). When I select one of these mods in the mod menu it always only shows "single player" - I have tried like 6 different mods.
What do I do wrong? Is it needed for the mod to be specifically altered to work in multiplayer or should the "Worksinmultiplayer = 1"-line just make it work? Or is something wrong with my game, cause there is not even a greyed-out multiplayer button in the menu?
I am at a loss! How did you guys manage to make it work and with which mods?
It's possible to play the Communitas Map in multiplayer. I've done so many times with friends. The game still does not appear to support full mods in multiplayer, however.

I guess nobody at 2K was ever able to quantify how many extra copies of Civ IV got sold due to the massive amount of amazing mods (due to better mod tools and multiplayer).
