Yesterday we got the result of the trial of Charlie Hebdo, a French magazine where 3 of the Danish cartoons on Mohammed were published.

Instead of rioting, the French muslims made an official complaint that these drawing where insulting on a religion or race basis.

The tribunal decided the magazine was not guilty, as the drawings were with texts showing they were directed to fundamentalists using islam as an excuse for terrorism, and not toward muslims in general.

The tribunal recognized that some of the drawings could be seen as shocking if taken alone, but put in the context they were not.

One of the muslim organization declared they were satisfy with the judgement, another one wants an appeal.

bah, boring, no burning cars, no riots, how dare they ;)

I can't believe these people are getting so upset about it. I've seen FAAAAAAAAR worse drawings of Jesus in sexually compromising and violent depictions that if applied to Islam would, judging from previous reactions, make the European riots look like pop rocks but I just shake my head in disappointment and carry on.

Actually...

On October 22, 1988, a French Catholic fundamentalist group launched molotov cocktails inside the Parisian Saint Michel movie theater to protest against the film. This terrorist attack injured thirteen people, four of whom were severely burned.

I guess they don't understand the meaning of freedom of speech and have nothing better to do when Muhammad is published.

Mmmh way to miss the point.

The point is that instead of going apeshit and bombing stuff or having angry mobs roam the country, they played by democracy's rules, sued the newspaper, lost, and accepted the loss.
The point is that this shows that Islam is not inherently incompatible with a democracy.

Wait, what? These artists went on trial for publishing a picture of muhhamad?

I will certainly grant that France is an exciting test-bed, since their religious policies are among the 'most different' (among Western nations)from what I was raised under

Actually the most interesting experiment is I believe the creation of an organisation whose goal is to represent Muslims when discussing with the government.
Historically only the Catholics, the Protestants and the Jews have had one, and it is a central part of the French secularism. Because Islam came much later into the French landscape, it was sorely lacking - meaning when dealing with Islamic matters, the government did not know who to deal with. Now there is one organization whose leaders are appointed by the Muslims themselves.

Of course this organization, being still brand new, is not completely perfect and not every Muslim agree to be represented by it. It is mainly comprised of mainstream Muslims, and the hardcore fanatics are keeping really clear away from it, but then again there also are Catholic fanatics who are not represented by the Catholic Church...
