pulled off a successful axe rush against gandhi, despite my best attempts to bumble the whole thing. the "rush" ended up being pretty protracted and he actually got another city out during the whole mess... that city wasnt a total loss though because it was built right on top of all the dye tiles which was pretty handy for early cash

still, i am probably better at rushing than i was when i started prince level. i think i should have waited a turn or two extra for another 1/2 axemen. failing to take bombay on my first attempt but whittling it down (and giving gandhi a great general) and returning with more axemen was not the best tactic.
think i started the rush a bit after 2000BC, ended it approx 500-250. so that was a mess. didnt build barracks either, which would have helped, but i thought it would be quicker to skip it. probably a mistake.
was pretty behind in tech after that and i took a long time to meet all the other civs. only knew mao and julius for a veeeery long time. eventually met justinian, then elizabeth. was contemplating going for diplo but made numerous mistakes such as trading with worst enemies (elizabeth apparently never forgets it when you do this.) also, isolation and lack of religion for most of the early game made it pretty difficult to get anyone other than julius and justinian (my main trading partners) to like me, and since julius would be who i would run against in the UN, this did not bode very well.
i was able to trade my way up to parity for the most part during the middle ages and industrial, until justinian and julius both decided that i was becoming too advanced. bummer. but i had managed to be first to liberalism and popped printing press, which in combination with a bunch of great scientists managed to keep me fairly healthy in terms of tech.
somewhere towards the modern age my entire empire seemed to take off in terms of research etc. developed a pretty good lead, and since diplo wasnt really possible anymore opted for space. everything went pretty well and i beelined to all the relevant techs. made a mistake in thinking that the internet would give me whatever discovered techs i wanted (no idea why i thought this) and got the fairly useless mass media. things were looking pretty good but for justinian getting a city with legendary culture. he seemed pretty far off but i built manhattan project and stockpiled a few nukes all the same. built spaceship parts. caesar is my only competition in the space race and i seem to have pulled ahead. justinian gets a second city with legendary culture, and his third is only 5,000 off and growing VERY fast. so i nuked it about 12 times. problem solved, right? except not so much, because he (or someone) sabotages one of my spaceship parts. still not a big deal i figure, i'll just rebuild, and seeign as i have a lead... but caesar builds the space elevator and builds almost every spaceship component in the space of about 10 turns. i guess he got all the techs while i was nuking justinian. he launches first, one piece missing. i launch a few turns later with all pieces.
lose the game with "3 turns left until victory"! bummer. victory was basically mine to lose, though, and that is what i did. ;P next time i think putting espionage buildings in spaceship building cities + turning the slider up will be necessary? havent played BtS that much and i mostly ignore espionage to be honest... but it seems i dont have much choice when it comes to space race endgames. unless there is some other course of action i could take about that? also, i will build the space elevator next time. even if i dont think i need it, just to prevent my rival from taking advantage of it
pretty happy though, as it went a lot better than my first game at prince level
