Monarch/Epic 1730AD UN Diplomatic:

Spoiler :
Shouldn't have played this on Monarch really, despite the AI's furious teching pace, it was a question of getting each to pleased/friendly.

So after messing about deciding how to win, I finally decided UN was the way to go. It wasn't difficult:

Let's start this!

Immortal/normal to 1 AD

Spoiler :

Settled in place, revealed dry corn which was nice.

Copper in BFC with Gandhi as a neighbor, AXE RUSH!!!

Civ4ScreenShot0359.jpg

Gandhi is well, Gandhi, not so many troops, so he goes down easy. 14-15 axes were all I used for 4 cities.

Civ4ScreenShot0360.jpg

I raze two terribly places cities and keep his cap and Jew holy city.

I got espionage on him, so there must be another continent, which turns out to be a buddhist lovefest. I must switch out of Judaism soon.

Lands and Tech situation:

Ugly, I know, but currency is in in 1, after that its a beeline to Monarch + CoL to salvage the economy, then I should get some tech going. If buddhism spreads to one of my cities, I will be really happy, and safe diplo-wise. I have a pretty big island to fill out now though.

BigTime:

Spoiler :
Nice game, crash looks ugly though. My feeling is you needed Monarchy much sooner for HR and some relief on the happy cap, which will allow cottages to be worked and grow. You're in a good position to play catch-up though, with all that land.

Immortal/normal to Lib

Spoiler :

Played lazy, had a decent chance for lib but Buddhist lovebest head man Justinian gets it early:

Whatever. I'm heading to SP to mass hammers and laze off to space. I will settle the SW island for some more production. I've starting settling it as well.

Lands:

And tech:

Beeline to communism and massed workshops should work out. Elizabeth is hated by everybody, so I should be safe.

That was some bull...

Spoiler :

I spammed SP and Caste WS and WM then built wealth/research for a straight beeline to the internet.

My tech rate was solid, gearing up to get internet in the EARLY 1800s. One problem, Justinian got it 1802!!!!!!! I'm sorry, but I had a strong opening, but the stupid buddhits lovefest caused Justinian to run away like hell. Whatever.

I'm starting to play less and less civ. I'll still host the games, but expect me to be playing more sparingly,

I've never played one of these instructional games before, so please show mercy. Playing Monach/Epic, description and pic thru 125AD.

Spoiler :
I started with warrior/worker/worker. Tech path Poly/Priest/Mining/BW. Happy to see Ghandi as my only neighbor, I can go with a little less military focus. Settler to the stone, settled on it and chop/whipped the Oracle. Played it and picked off Writing right before it finished, to get COL as my free tech. Backfilled with Agri, then Aest/Lit and the GL chop/whipped. Founded 3rd city on west coast by cow and crab to seal off the north of the continent from my Indian friend.
I need to grab one of the Iron plots with my next city, the one to the south with the sugar and river tiles is the target. Current research is Alpha to tech trade with Ghandi, and I'd like to get sailing to find out what it up with that little scrap of land I can see off the Northeast coast. Hopefully it is big enough to hold some of the other civs and let me trade off Aest for backfill.

If you think that's bad, a few months ago I had the same AI found mining inc in 1715 AD...with the engineer you get from being first to fusion...in other words the ship was LAUNCHED considerably before 1800.

That's why I don't play deity much. Too erratic/annoying, and wins aren't guaranteed to anybody even on immortal.

Monarch/Epic
Spoiler :

Game was pretty silly. Axed Ghandi and eventually had 15 cities in the continent. Kept pressing end turn to get internet + all the space techs. Watched Justinian kill everyone to eventually get 4 vassals and 40 cities. Had he put out a diplo vote he would have won but he kept throwing out emancipation votes. Lucky me. I got the spaceship there around 1930.

hi guys. first game on monarch ever. played until it was... over. ~1980AD summary underneath spoiler tags...

Spoiler :
pulled off a successful axe rush against gandhi, despite my best attempts to bumble the whole thing. the "rush" ended up being pretty protracted and he actually got another city out during the whole mess... that city wasnt a total loss though because it was built right on top of all the dye tiles which was pretty handy for early cash ;) still, i am probably better at rushing than i was when i started prince level. i think i should have waited a turn or two extra for another 1/2 axemen. failing to take bombay on my first attempt but whittling it down (and giving gandhi a great general) and returning with more axemen was not the best tactic.

think i started the rush a bit after 2000BC, ended it approx 500-250. so that was a mess. didnt build barracks either, which would have helped, but i thought it would be quicker to skip it. probably a mistake.

was pretty behind in tech after that and i took a long time to meet all the other civs. only knew mao and julius for a veeeery long time. eventually met justinian, then elizabeth. was contemplating going for diplo but made numerous mistakes such as trading with worst enemies (elizabeth apparently never forgets it when you do this.) also, isolation and lack of religion for most of the early game made it pretty difficult to get anyone other than julius and justinian (my main trading partners) to like me, and since julius would be who i would run against in the UN, this did not bode very well.

i was able to trade my way up to parity for the most part during the middle ages and industrial, until justinian and julius both decided that i was becoming too advanced. bummer. but i had managed to be first to liberalism and popped printing press, which in combination with a bunch of great scientists managed to keep me fairly healthy in terms of tech.

somewhere towards the modern age my entire empire seemed to take off in terms of research etc. developed a pretty good lead, and since diplo wasnt really possible anymore opted for space. everything went pretty well and i beelined to all the relevant techs. made a mistake in thinking that the internet would give me whatever discovered techs i wanted (no idea why i thought this) and got the fairly useless mass media. things were looking pretty good but for justinian getting a city with legendary culture. he seemed pretty far off but i built manhattan project and stockpiled a few nukes all the same. built spaceship parts. caesar is my only competition in the space race and i seem to have pulled ahead. justinian gets a second city with legendary culture, and his third is only 5,000 off and growing VERY fast. so i nuked it about 12 times. problem solved, right? except not so much, because he (or someone) sabotages one of my spaceship parts. still not a big deal i figure, i'll just rebuild, and seeign as i have a lead... but caesar builds the space elevator and builds almost every spaceship component in the space of about 10 turns. i guess he got all the techs while i was nuking justinian. he launches first, one piece missing. i launch a few turns later with all pieces.

lose the game with "3 turns left until victory"! bummer. victory was basically mine to lose, though, and that is what i did. ;P next time i think putting espionage buildings in spaceship building cities + turning the slider up will be necessary? havent played BtS that much and i mostly ignore espionage to be honest... but it seems i dont have much choice when it comes to space race endgames. unless there is some other course of action i could take about that? also, i will build the space elevator next time. even if i dont think i need it, just to prevent my rival from taking advantage of it

pretty happy though, as it went a lot better than my first game at prince level

anyways, that was fun. i will do this again, next time i will take pictures and perhaps a few notes so that i can provide a more cogent summary than the one i provided ;)
