Monarch Student^ XXIV Montezuma

Domination in 1900 :)

Spoiler :

Tech Democracy and switched to US/Emancipation. Picked up the Taj along the way. Got Banking and all the prereqs for cuirassiers, turned off the slider, rushed banks, rushed cuirassiers. Overwhelmed Mao with cuirassier spam fairly quickly before he could get rifles.

My next plan was to go Communism, get Kremlin, then Rifling, rush buy Cavalry and kill Zara. But Zara went Communism too and built Kremlin while I was fighting Mao. Since Zara neglected to get Rifling I just used my cuirassiers to take all his cities.

MY continent!

The other continent.
monarch_monte_07.jpg

Obviously Alex had the same idea I did, except not as successful. Of course he's at war with Pacal. He's also very backwards like all the other AIs on this map.

I start teching towards tanks. Alex declares on me because he's Alex. He makes a half hearted attempt to pillage my seafood, I kill his frigates with destroyers and negotiate peace. Once I hit industrialism, I just rush buy tanks everywhere for the rest of the game.

monarch_monte_10.jpg

Of course after winning I took a few more turns just to wipe Alex completely off the map. :)

Now I can see why this was such a slow tech game. Alex over on the other continent is a dumb warmonger who doesn't know how to research. Mongolia got wiped out long before I met them. Zara was clearly going culture, so he probably had his slider off. Pacal was probably doing the same, and he had to contend with Alex. Mao wasn't as bad in tech as I originally thought, despite his odd decision to delay Alphabet until after 1000AD. He was even a few turns away from getting Rifling when I invaded with cuirassiers, but that ended when I started capturing his cities.

You are missing the deity WB-Save...

You are missing the deity WB-Save...

Honestly, maybe one person will play deity, so its not really worth it to make one. Using the immortal save and picking deity isn't the end of the world, they will still get their settler since I deleted the beginunit line. You can add whatever tech the deity AIs get in the WB save if you want.

Thru 1465AD:
Spoiler :

I decided to go the full Monty, even though it appeared that he would probably get longbows before I was ready to declare. After monarchy I switched to HR and teched construction> HBR. I think you can see where I was headed. ;) By 790AD I was ready to roll:

Civ4ScreenShot0293.jpg

I had another small stack to the west which headed straight for Beijing to begin bombarding, while my main stack headed for the dye city. Mao was helpfull building the MoM in Beijing instead of longbows (he'd never finish it).

I was running the sac alter whip cycle in all cities, mostly building catapults. I lost a ton of them, but not many WEs or jags. I had a bunch of C2CR3 jags by the end of the war. They'll make nice rifles. :)

When he was down to his last city I took 10 turns of peace to grab all of his techs (fuedalism and mono). By 1250AD Mao is dead. Long live Mao.

Civ4ScreenShot0296.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0297.jpg

The global tech rate is obviously pathetic. I was able to build the colossus after 1000AD, and the GL was still available around 1300AD when I started it (it went the next turn). Still, I was able to grab some of the aesthetics wonders like ShwedPaya after 1000AD.

Civ4ScreenShot0299.jpg

I finished liberalism in 1465AD, taking astro in order to get overseas TRs and resource trades. I met the other AIs and opened borders immediately, grabbing all of the available resources. Current plan is to tech to economics for the free GM and then to rifling/MilTrad and then take the Aztec way of life to my friends and neighbors. :)

Current map makers are WAY less lazy than me. I usually just cut the begin unit line and have a save with high level starting techs (usually immortal) and a save without.

Deity Toggle...
Spoiler :

I do not think loading the immortal wb and then selecting deity works very well, since the game still seemed much too easy for a standard game.

Anyhow, granted I caused numerous destructions over the whole board with nukes, but even still, a large master-vassal like this should not have been so rediculously backwards, as can be seen.

crushedr.jpg

My worst moment, was capturing the LAST city on my continent. I had a Jag which I had super-promoted, and later had him upgraded to a leader-rifle, and I ended up dying before I could get 200 exp on him due to a sh!tty die-roll on the last frieken city... Typical..

Emperor Normal to 580AD

Spoiler :

For whatever reason (actually because of the ivory) I thought it would be great plan to join the war against Zara.
I managed to raze 3 cities of him, capture copper one and even if I tried I couldn't get his capital though :-(. They have neverending war with Mao.

After teching Alpha I took peace for some techs (medi+sailing).

Have trouble getting "right type of GP" since first was great prophet, the second one GM (he will do trade mission in Mao's land).

I cottaged 2 cities (capital and 2x gold one). the rest is mostly farms and mines and waiting for workshops wasting worker turns on chopping and roading.

Few turns ago I finally got to settling the gem city, improving the happy situation. I got HR too. So happy cap shouldn't be issue from now on.
I would like to spread more hindu religion, I didn't join Mao though, because Zara is Confu, but seeing his -12 relation now I kind of don't see light at the end of tunnel. Will have to kill him off...but it's questionable with what type of army. but with 4 cities I should not probably bother.
Mao's strength is somewhat worrying but I hope they will enjoy his toy.

One new thing I learned is that the "we yearn to join motherland" is indeed battled with own culture, since in berlin it went from -2 to -1... interesting, taking early cities and leaving enemy AI is not that bad actually.

Sitting at 580AD without CoL and CS is something new for me and definitely means I am severely behind in lib race. So the questions stays what to tech next. I marked math->CoL->CS since bureau will be usefull with the cottages and hammers in capital anyway.
Then I will have a deep thought about how to progress further.
With the only "reliable" tech partner it seems tough. I hope I will eventually get trades with Frederick since he is "only" -4, but tough to judge.

since the game still seemed much too easy for a standard game.

Actually that's a combo function of land quality, AI spacing, and its inability to adapt. If you look at games played at other difficulties you'll notice that it's easier for the same reasons the deity save is easier (I actually had an AI peacevassal to me.........).

WB deity starts out with the exact same units as regular deity provided the AI has archery; the only difference is starting techs for SOME civs. Bonuses otherwise precisely match difficulty chosen.

If you add the starting techs to the AIs in the WB save that it wouldn't have had (and it's not that big a difference from immortal actually, deity's real boosts come from 2nd settler and MASSIVE production/tech boosts) it will be identical to deity for the AI. The real problem with WB saves remains that the barbs don't start with archery, and that there is no way to change that short of opening the WB up on game-start and giving it to them.

I played this one for a few hours yesterday as well. Not sure if I'll get to finish it any time soon, so here's the gist of what I played: (Monarch)
Spoiler :

Felt constrained for land with two leaders close to me.

No early religion on the continent in my game, but zara got CoL and Confu pretty early. (I do love adopting that little weirdo's religion!)

Chose to rush Germany with axes & jaguars, as zara's cultural trait would mean facing higher defences wiithout siege.

Got to Freddy before he had any metal or horses hooked up. He got 6 cities out, but only 2 were on hills. The biggest source of delay was waiting for the numbers to bust up a hill city with a wall and 5 archers. Pillaging improvements and camping the roads helped there. I teched alpha myself and decided to give him 10 turns of peace in exchange for 3 early techs. During those 10 turns he popped a GS from the GW, and had himself a golden age, but could still only muster a handful of archers when the 10 turn bell sounded his doom.

Lost the cow on the marble/gems site to zara, and ended up with a pretty terribly undernourished city as a result.

Once war was done, I built research until I got currency, then built some gold while teching aesth/lit/music. Grabbed calendar from Mao, and whored Parth/TGLib/SoZ(to fight culture pressure)/MoM. Missed the GA from music, but popped a scientist at just the right time to start my first 12 turn golden age.

Should've gone MC early and ignored Monarchy (6 :) from gems/gold/silver!)

Used the GA to finish Machinery&Civil Service. Have ~20maces, 30cats, 5trebs ready to declare on Zara.

Like I say, I won't get back to this one for a bit, so it looks like the AI get to live. For now... :)

Monarch/epic 1754 conquest:

Spoiler :

Pretty simple, really. Just head up to economics for the free GM, then MilTad> GP> PP(bulb)> RepParts> Rifling> Chem> SciMeth(bulb)> Communism. I popped a second GM about 5 turns after the free one, so I netted around 5700:gold: from TMs to Mutal. Thanks, Pacal :goodjob: (especially since you'll be my next victim). Popped a prophet in the capital and started a GA, Taj gave me a second one 3 turns later for 24 turns of GA (I have MoM). This sped up my research to rifling a lot. I switched civics to theo/slavery/nationhood, started whipping and drafting, and upgraded a huge stack of cuirassiers to cavalry, as well as a bunch of C1CR3 jags to rifles, and set sail for Pacal.
Civ4ScreenShot0312.jpg

I had at least as many waiting for transport once theses guys unloaded. He capped after 3 cities, and I gave them all back. Pacal had bribed Kublai in, so I sent a stack of 30 or so cavalry to take out his 3  cities, and then heal for the attack on Alex. As soon as I took Kublai's first city he vassaled to Alex (whimp!), which was fine with me. First I took the last mongolian city:
Civ4ScreenShot0313.jpg

Then I healed up and head for Athens via Alex's 2 closest cities with 2 stacks. Meanwhile, I had another huge stack that started taking his cities from the east. After I took Athens he capped, an that was that.

Spoiler :

I SIP and worked the wine, so i could get buddism faster. My tech went Med-AH-Agri-Mining-BW-Priesthood-Wheel-Pot-Writing-Alpha-Asethitics-Poly (For parthenon), and Math (partial research). I managed to get COL from the Oracle so now i founded two religions and have access to the UB, everybody on the cointent is Buddist eccept Mao, who later converted to confu, Mao is also worst enemies with freddy so that could be a prob. I got my six cities up and im now trying for the Great library/Pantheon. I managed to settle a city at the Gems,Marble/Bronze site. I traded for Monarchy and IW with Zara. And i also got a GS for an academy in my cap. I might try for a AP victory if i get a priest specilist. Otherwise, its just a standerd beline to CS and lib. Hopefully i can bulb philo.

@stevoh

Spoiler :

Nice job doing that religion gambit! It seems to be working out pretty well. As long as you keep developing your tech rate, you should be able to get a nice advantage over your continent and take them out!
I would try to spread buddhism to Mao though, so you can avoid wars altogether on the continent. Gun for a GP too.

@Big time
Spoiler :
Thanks! :)I actually got philo aswell, but freddy built the AP. Im not worried about mao as he becomes pretty backwards in my next update (The AP keept him busy in war aswell). The AP eventually turns him into the most hated guy on cour cointent, thats what he gets for converting to confu!

To 1898AD.
Spoiler :

I continued my tech towards lib and managed to get philo and alot of important wonders, such as the Great library, and Parathenon. I also built the State of Zeus, and the wonder that gives access to all of the religion civis. I traded horse for ivory with zara so i could complete the SOZ sooner. And i did. I teched literature-Currency-CS- bulbed Philo and then i went out to lib, and i got it! I cant remember which date though. I then took Nat from lib and started on the Taj. Freddy got the AP and i voted for zara, who got the chair. He kept trying to get everybody to DOW on Mao which happened a few times, and he even voted to give one of Freddy's cities to me! lol . I got oxford before building the Taj, and i got the Taj. I teched towards printing press (partial bulb) and chemistry (partial bulb). After that i went for Demrocary and switched into Emancipation. I met the other cointent after whipping two carvles. I got circunav. Alex was at war with pacal when i met them, but then Kublia peace vassled to Alex later on, its not too much of a big deal though.
I eventually built a SOD to attack Fred. I used Drafted Rifles/Muskets/Trebs and spys to capture two cities from him. I had to take peace as he was going for assembly line. I then rebuilt my forces and eventually killed him . He stupidely built the pentagon in berlin ad the Statue of Liberty in another city for me, even though we were at war. I stopped at industralism, it looks like i'll go for either a UN dilopmation or domination. I'll take the rest of the world with Tanks/Infantry and bombers or nukes.Or i might change my mind completly and go for space. Oh and i nearly forgot, i shrined buddism in my cap.

2023AD-First emperor Domination Victory!
Spoiler :

Well it was pretty straightfoward once i was finished with fred. I went after Zara and this vassles Mao and Pacal (Peace vassal). I took them on with tanks, infantry, bombers and nukes. I did'nt kill them though as the built a few cities on the small tundra island. I later rush bought about 17 ICBM's and Dowed on alex, i nuked each of his cities at least twice. But he would'nt cap because of the crappy little peace vassle,Kublia.I had to reduce Kublia down to one city, before he broke free from alex. He capped to me. Then i rush bought a navy (Captured Kermlin from zara) And kept taking cities from Alex untill i got the win! And its my first emperor domination win. I have now won every victory on emperor (eccept conquest and time, domination is pretty similar to conquest and who cares about time). Unfortunally i got a pretty terrible score in the end becaus eof the late win but I don't care, this map was really fun. Thanks Big time.Great choice for a leader to revive the Monarch Student series bdw, gotta love monty!:D

Nice win Stevoh and congrats on first Emperor dom win! Nuking the entire world does have a sense of finality about it :)
And yeah, I thought people would enjoy Monty as a come-back leader. I'm pleased with the response that this one got and I see that there is still interest in this series despite the arrival of Civ V.

Heh, might be because of the arrival of Civ V...

I gave this a start, but haven't had time to do much with it or post due to SGOTM and other commitments. Challenging starting position though - I HATE being so closed in.

Just found these a couple weeks ago, workin my way thru :)

Spoiler :
Killed germany, was irresistible even for peacemonger like me. Spread to 13 cities we r all confucian and happy. Got oxford and Taj Mahal timed to come both in 2 turns. Should be able to have 48 turn golden age then I might attack. Lovin the switches between caste and slaves, and philo and or.

Forgot name of host of Monarch thread but thankyou.

Spoiler :
Zara passaled after I massed on border with rifles. Mao died to infantry. Spent a while makin transports(not enough). Im so bad at intercontinental. Dont care tho my win date was still my best ever. Tho I did learn that best way to transport from one continent to another is likely to be the shortest route:cry:. Alex owned the whole other continent and his tech was so bad he didnt have frigates.
