I'm a pretty good monarch player, and can win most of my games. I've been thinking about going up to Emperor, but I'm not sure how. My most recent Monarch game as the Dutch on Continents is too easy. I've tried a couple of Emperor games, and i've only won one (COTM 17 - Celts). I normally play with everything random, should i rig the civs until i get comfortable?

You shouldn't need to rig the civs at all moving up to Emperor ... if you focus on the big three: contacts, expansion, and trade. Oh yeah, and not letting the game go into autopilot. (You know, like when you've cleared your continent of rivals or hit some other milestone and you spend the next 20 turns just sort of coasting along, not really pushing it.) The only "rigging" I think that I do is turning off the barbs (they seem to help out the AI much more than me at the higher levels) and trimming back the number of civs if I'm breaking into a new level.)

Good luck! It really starts to get interesting at Emperor!

I would self-select everything when moving up a level, especially your own civ. Why not try it with the dutch on continents if your last monarch game went well with that? AGR and SEA sure is a nice combo.
I agree with SimpleMonkey about the barbs.

Monarch to emperor isnt to bad, its the levels above i seem to find hard (demi-god/deity).

As long as you trade intelligently (keep ai broke), get a reasonable start etc you should be fine imho.

I pick my civ / land type and often turn barbs off (above emp) and dont feel there is anything wrong with it ;p

The thing about emperor is your second citizen coming in unhappy.
That was the biggest change for me.
It slows down your research or exploring if you don't start near a lux.
After you get used to it though it becomes natural.

Huts are fine at Emp, especially, if you are expansionist. It is not till Sid that they will be completely useless. The main reason to turn off barbs is to slow down the tech headstart. No free AA techs for the AI.

Did you actually lose those emporer games that you tried, or did it just seem like you were behind and then you gave up? You may fall behind a bit early, especially if it is panagea. But if you manage your empire fairly well and be aggressive, you can easily catch up in most cases, especially if you can get an army.

Managing the one content citizen was the biggest problem. Look for luxuries, as you will need them.
