First off, I would like to say thanks for CFC. I have learned so much on this site and my game has quickly improved from standard Warlord to coming-close-to-winning on Monarchy. Who knew I could do it?

So after lurking for months, I need more direct assistance. I am currently in the last stages of my first Monarchy game (vanilla Civ3, v1.29). Things were going well, I took over virtually all of my continent, reducing the Zulu to an afterthought, but the Germans have their own continent. We're the only 3 left.

The Germans were isolated through the Middle Ages, with many cities but little technology. Bis has catapulted himself ahead while the rest of us, crowded on one continent, battled it out. Now he is 2 technologies ahead of me, the Persians, and getting close to launching his space ship. He's got 5 parts, building 4 more, and probably close to getting Laser to get that last piece.

I blew most of my treasury trying to steal a technology, unsuccessfully. Now I have little money, great city production, working on the first 3 ship parts (I just got Space Flight) and the UN.

My question- Is it better to try and destroy Berlin or gamble on the UN vote? I don't think I can catch up tech wise. I can get gpt deals, but I have razed some cities (oops, Zulu cities). With only 3 civ's left, could everyone just vote for themselves? What's the outcome of that?

I have a feeling I'm going to have to create an armada and head to Berlin. Maybe it's a lost cause, but it sure has been fun and challenging. Anyway, I thought I should ask the all-knowing CFC-ers. :worship:

hard to say like this without having the game file to examine your situation. also can i not say anything because i only play for conquest victories.

i can give you one little advise though. strategy is about looking forward to the future, make plans to handle what is expected to happen in the future.

You should have been thinking about this quite some time ago.

Yup, I sure should have! I guess that's part of learning more on Monarch. I'm used to completely outpacing everyone in the end of a regent game, as I tend to minimize war and go for overall superiority with a space shot at the end.

Can you quickly destroy the 3'rd civ?

If you get rid of them, then Germany probably won't have a UN vote ......

I'd stick to building the Space Ship, if your are ahead production wise. Fight the other civ to try to get a great leader and use it to make a part.

If I kill the 3rd civ (Zulu) and have a UN vote with just 2, what happens?

I will keep going on the research and the production, since I am prebuilding in many cities. Do you guys sell buildings at this point in the game? My builder nature has resulted in lots of infrastructure that may be unnecessary. But I've never resorted to selling it! Maybe another valuable lesson.

This has already got me thinking of some real possibilities... Thanks!

Can you offer germany something to get them to agree to a mutual protection pact? You might be able to get them to spend lots of resources on fighting, while you concentrate on the space race....

I'd kill the Zulu, if germany calls for a vote, you'll probably lose. If they aren't there, you vote for yourself and germany votes for themselves .... anyone know if that will be a push? I've never won by UN vote.

There are only ever two contenders for the UN vote. I think they are the two top points leaders, tho' it could relate to population.I assume you're 2nd in these respects.

If the Germans aren't bigger than you and the other civ combined, you should be able to win UN vote by signing alliances vs Germany with the other AI; Zulu'll never vote for someone they're at war with (unless, perhaps if you've been REALLY atrocious ie. lotsa nukes).

Harder to time if you don't build the UN yourself, as the Zulu might broker peace before Bismark calls the vote.

I'd finish off the Zulu. Since SS Victory seems unlikely, as does UN, I would try my best to go ahead and take out Germany. Take as many cities as possible, and maybe, just maybe, you will win by either Domination or Conquest. That's what I would probably do in your situation.

If Germany is the only civ left after Zulus gone, use nukes on him. If he isn't I probably wouldn't bother to much with the nukes, could get you in more trouble than you want.

That's just what I would probably do, but I would be able to help you more with a save.

I recommend 3 nuclear subs loaded w/ tactical nukes, 2 - 3 transports filled w/ INF (better yet Mech Inf) and tanks, and 2 carriers filled w/ bombers. Of course add in any protective units necessary.

1st tactical nuke - Berlin
2nd & 3rd tactical nuke - Clear shortest approach to Berlin. By clear, I mean railway system. Germany will likely take out your landing force completely in two turns if the railway is intact. You need the buffer zone, plus use bombers to reduce Germany's forces.

A fourth nuke can be used to destroy a Germany SOD.

Final Goal = Capture and raze Berlin.

This is so helpful. Thanks!

I have built the UN, so the vote's all up to me. Based on CFC advice, I always make sure I build the UN, but I haven't tried to win with it before. The Zulu are at war with Germany, but I have recently (in the past ~3 turns) been at war with them and razed some cities. I thought that put me out of the running completely. Maybe I can time it right.

I'm at work now and can't post the save. I'll take a look and make some decisions and maybe post tonight.

Really, I thought I wouldn't get this far. If I can pull it out I would be happy. Thanks again!

Just my 2 cents. If there are only 3 civs left yours being one of them don't bother with the UN. You have to have gracious with both of these civs since you've razed cities in the past.

Just go in there and take out Berlin. That will significantly delay his space ship. The name of the game is not to let him complete that ship because if he does he wins. Sounds like you're a little behind but destroy or capture Berlin and maybe you'll have first shot at the spaceship.

What I'd do in your situation is to beeline for tacticle nukes and bomb Germany, including Berlin, to the stone age. Since it's basically just you and Germany, who cares about the weak Zulu, don't feel sorry for using nukes. The reputation hit you take is meaningless, now if there were more civs in the game I'd think twice before nuking.

Good luck.

Since it's just you three left, I would see if I could sign a ROP agreement with Germany. Give him whatever he wants for the ROP. Then I would send all the troops I could directly outside of Berlin and then break the ROP. All you need to do is capture his Capitol to destroy his Space Ship and win the game. If his Capitol is on the coast, then you wouldn't even need the ROP. Just stage a bunch of transports right outside his boundary next to his Capitol and move them on in and unload in one turn if possible. Then attack the next turn. Make sure you have lots of good defenders as well as offensive units in the stack. As for the UN vote, If he builds the UN, then the largest Civ is the other candidate for the UN. You could try buttering up the other Civ. Get him to at least Polite. He might vote for you. With your vote, that would be a win too. If you don't think it's possible to win a UN vote, then attack Berlin. :)

WOW! I haven't won yet, but it's just turns away. Thanks to all who helped with advice!

I tried first to make an MPP with the Zulu but I got pulled in to a war with Germany. The UN route was working so far. But I kept waiting for a chance to call a vote, but no luck. Then, Zulu and Germany signed a peace treaty and turned on me. SO, I bit the bullet and gathered the fleet and nukes I had been building, just in case. I was getting some nuisance attacks, bombing and the like, but the land invasions were nothing to worry about, just a single transport, and once even a trieme :crazyeye:

Off I went across the ocean with a few nukes, 3 transports packed with MI and MA, a couple of carriers full of bombers. And it worked! I nuked Berlin and the area around it, sustained some ICBMs in return, but the next turn I had destroyed their spaceship.

Now I'm 2 parts away with a leader in my back pocket for that last part. The Zulu and Germans are fighting each other and it looks like a win. :D

Again, thanks. I probably wouldn't have taken such a warlike route without a push.

Sounds great! Good job on the nuking and stopping their spaceship. Is it safe to assume then you won this game via spaceship victory?

Yup, a space race victory. I think that in my next game I will have to turn that victory condition off and try for something new.

Thanks again everyone!
