Money troubles

@mystik
I was talking about the new game you had started when I said it had a "happy ending." Considering you didn't get blown off the planet.

ok,

Oh by the way, I discovered governments last night!!

Previously i have always been selecting just 1 government type as it was in Civ3 not realising i can select multiple governments!

Yea and i always thought it was strange that there was not much difference in the government types,,, i would just take Monarchy and then forget about it.

I discovered governments by accident because i decided to change from Monarchy to Theocracy because of the unit experience upgrade. It was late game and i had all the techs researched so there was no period of Anarchy required.... this enabled me to have a chance to notice that Monachy was still selected after taking Theocracy,,, i thought "what the,,, why is Monachy still selected?,, Oh i can select multiple governments at the same time!!"

So i have been playing all this time and kicking ass on noble level with just Monarchy and the rest on default setting!!!!

Civics in Civ4 are really deep compared to the previous games. There are really a bunch of different combinations you can use to fit what you are trying to accomplish. For the particular game you started the thread with, you would want to ideally try this combo:

Representation (ideally with Pyramids) but Hereditary Rule if you don't have the Pyramids
gives all of your specialists +3 beakers

The Representation civic runs well with caste system and later with mercantilism since every specialist you employ will give you more beakers. Unfortunately, Representation is not available until you tech Constitution but with the Pyramids you can switch to it very early. Hereditary Rule gives each of your cities +1 happiness for each unit that is garrisoned in a city which in theory allows you to grow your cities to their max growth potential limited by the health and food of the city as long as you keep building garrison units.

Bureaucracy (available with Civil Service)
+50% commerce and production in the capital

This might be one of the more powerful civics in the game early on. If your capital is heavily cottaged it will lead to a lot of science/or gold.

Caste System (available with Code of Laws)
allows you to have as many scientists/merchants/artist specialists

This means you don't need to have libraries, markets, or theatres built to employ these specialists. You can effectively convert population into beakers, gold, or culture in this manner. You will still want to build the infrastructure to increase the production of the specialists and consider leaving this civic for slavery or serfdom once the infrastructure is in place or you could keep caste system for as many specialists as possible.

The Civics in Civ 4 are pretty good but I preferred the ones in SMAC - they seemed to have a much greater effect on game play.

SMAC - Syd Miers Alpha Centauri?

Well i mean it's not fair to compare any normal game to that freakin phenomenon, honestly,, it is like comparing a shopping mall travelator to SG1's Stargate!!!

Come on back down to reality dude:crazyeye:

Thanks for the info Emac78

SMAC is my favorite of the Civ franchise, no other game had the complexity, flexibility or replayability of SMAC, and I say that even though I've really loved many of the other Civ franchise games.

Here here!

I have never seen a game so jam packed full with ground breaking concepts as SMAC. If only it had allowed city maintenance off turn in the multiplayer,,, whooo, the hair on the back of my neck is standing up just thinking about it!

I feel sad I never played SMAC.To you it must as though I lived in a cave.

Well next time your playing civ4, you can think about a few key things as you go along....

Wish you could join those two islands?
Wish you could redesign that tank unit?
Wish you could extend the range of your bombers?
Wish you could upgrade your unit with different specialisations?
Wish you could sink that enemy city under the sea?
Wish you could build radar towers to spot incomming enemy units?
Wish you could build sonar boys to detect enemy subs?
You want to build a city in the ocean?
Wish you had 2nd level farming improvements?
Wish you could change that desert into grassland?

Well i mean the list just goes on and on,, i mean just about anything you could ever imagine wanting to do in civ4, can be done in SMAC!

Or how about turning all terrain into pink fungus!

And yes, pink fungus too!!

Oh also, next time your playing civ4 and you see that fish just out of reach of your city workers... think of SMAC, and its wonderful supply units, you can park them on any tile anywhare to secure any 1 recource category that tile provides as a bonus to the city.
