monitor flicker

I have Windows Vista Home Premium AMD Athlon 64 X 2 Dual core Processor
4899+ 2 G B Ram N vidia Ge Force 6100 n Force 430

I purchase Civ IV and the anciliary monitor overlays i.e. meeting fellow leaders etc flicker very badly - to the point you can bearly see them. I tried to download a few patchs and to no avail. One patch could not detect Civ IV. Pls advise on how to fix.

is this just civ4 or also an expansion?
which patch did not recognize the game? which worked?
is this the cd version or a download one?
