Monitor Shopping

So I checked out Circuit City. They didn't have crap - there were a handful of 17" for no less than $150 each, after the discount (I think it was 30%). I took a look around and didn't really see anything at particularly impressive prices.

I stopped at Best Buy, too, since it's next door to another shop I had to hit. They had a lot of $300 and $400 monsters, but nothing big enough for low enough - at $200, it was all 17".

So I think I'm going to go with Mars's 22" suggestion.

Except that while I was at Best Buy I started considering skipping the monitor altogether and getting a new laptop instead. My laptop is more than 10 years old and constantly needs surgery, and I can get a new one that matches or beats my desktop's specs for only a few hundred more than the monitor budget. So I'm gonna think on that for a few days, then either buy the 22" or hunt for laptops.

Do you use a laptop often?

Not often, no, but only because it's old and crappy. I think I could get a lot more done if I didn't have to sit at my desk to do anything computer-related. If I could watch TED talks in my studio, I'd probably spend a lot more time in there, being productive.

i never bought a laptop because I would only use it while I'm traveling, 1-2 weeks a year. The rest of the time I dislike them. But I use the desktop every other day.

If you need just a cheap laptop that doesnt get bogged down by basic internet browsing and etc, look on ebay for the old thinkpads ( 4x-series ). They're fairly light, can do enough and dont cost too much ( mom got one for 220$ which, considering its a full-size laptop, not a netbook, is a very good price )

I just ordered an HP that mostly beats my desktop's specs for $500. I didn't want to wait for the discounts to vanish, so I pounced. I'm in the middle of a big expensive construction project, and I think I might be able to sneak under budget on that - so when I do, I'll be ordering that 22" Mars suggested. So this wasn't a total waste. Again thanks, y'all are super helpful.
