Montenegro Question

Now... where is that 1991 cartoon of the mapmaker pointing a gun to his head because there's too many border changes? That's the first thing that came to mind when I read that.

I remember that clearly - we had just spent the previous year learning about the Soviet Union...

And Czechoslovakia, I guess. What is fairly shocking me is the fact that even some Europeans still think we're one country :crazyeye:

I remember looking at a large map of Europe when i was in elementary school, and thinking that Chechoslovakia had a cool shape.
Not any more though :p ;)

Yes, like an arrow sticked into Germany

(except those written in cyrillic ;) ),

You should learn Cyrillic it's not hard. It's very closely related to Latin Alphabet. For example, I think "Ostala braca Srbi sami" in Cyrillic would be "Остала браса Срби сами". Some of the letters are the same. Some of them look the same but are different. Like the Cyrillic p is pronounced like r.

On topic: I think it's a shame Montenegro became independent. I guess real soon people will be claiming "Montenegran" is a separate language from Serbian.

Well, it is annoying! :gripe: ;)

It's like saying England when you mean Britain, Soviet Union instead of Russia or Third Reich istead of Germany

Well, I probably should, because I feel completely lost, when traveling through Serbia or other countries where cyrillic is used. When I traveled with my parents about 5 years ago, it was OK because they can read it. Some poor Dutch followed our car through entire Serbian part of Bosnia, I guess because they also couldn't read what is on the signs ;)

Out of interest, Is 'Serbia and Montenegro' in the world cup? Could be kinda awkward for them during this break-up.

Just ban them from the tournament and stick Denmark in instead. They're used to that allready. :D

What are you doing going to countries without even knowing their language? It's like going to China without knowing Chinese, or Syria without knowing Arabic. It's easy if you are Czech in Serbia or Russia, the languages are similar. You just have to know the alphabet, which is very similar to get an idea of what the signs say.

I don't think you've ever traveled outside your own country.
