Civ games to me always have been the most fun in the first 200 turns. Then you are either on your way to victory or lacking too much behind others.
Reason is that exploration and founding new cities have been done by then. This game can have so much potential in making founding cities much harder. You land on an alien planet after all!
- Make the miasma much more abundant and lethal. => harder to get trade routes and exploration takes longer.
- Unable founding cities on them. => makes you work more for new cities.
- Make aliens stronger. => again, makes exploration and new cities more difficult.
- Make aquatic aliens really aggressive. => if aliens land on our planet and the humans are friendly (I highly doubt that...) that doens't mean sharks are friendly!
- Nerf trade routes (obviously) => one per city, two with a later tech? Don't ever make them invunerable to alien attacks. Get limited range and have this increased gradually with techs.
- Don't show other Civs locations. => makes exploration more fun and a bit more difficult.
- Have sea miasma => makes exploration more difficult, and trade routes too.
I think this way you really are looking forward to exploration more and longer. You really have to work to get rid of miasma and actively pursue techs that help you do so. Now techs are just ways to get you more of the same types of building. But then it really helps you manage to survive in this alien world.
