Hello,
I'm playing as Japan (regent level), and while I had a good start, it seems i've run into a wall of sorts... the problem is, everyone around me has rifled units, which my samurai's can't compete against and I'm yet to find a saltpeter resource. I'm not sure what to do, I'm at war with nearly everyone and starting to get me arse kicked. Without saltpeter, am I screwed?

Sober up and use bombardment stacks to offset the rifles and get some armies going. You can do it, raze a few cities and get some breathing room. Do you have anythigyou may trade toget salt or is one in range to capture?

what do u mean by 'bombardment stacks'? And why raze instead of capturing cities? Unfortunately, I have nothing of value to trade, nor am I near salt

Build several trebuchets and use them to bombard a city before your Samurai attack. Ideally, you'd like to reduce every defender in the town to 1hp, but every little bit helps.

Bombardment units are cats/trebs/cannon/arties/radar. Whatever is availble for that era. 30 or more trebs can even up things in a hurry. All cities make units. Barracks one make sami's, other make trebs.

Razing, because you will slow and then stop the march if you try to hold cities. Come along after you hurt them with a settler to found new cities. You do not have to worry about getting use of roads as you have all those 1 move units anyway.

Getting up a couple of armies will allow you to break them off to either attack or pillage, your call. If you have recoqnize the danger upon learning you had no salt, you would have switch to war mode right then. Stop research to support your troops.
