More than 8 players?

I play cooperatively with two friends against NPC's. However whenever you go past 8 players it says "unsupported number of players". This is a real killer because now we can only do 3v3 when with 4 more players we could do 3v3v3v3.

Is the unsupported number of players message wrong and it still does 12 players....or does civ5 really only allow for 8 players max with npc's?

If it is a cap is there a fan released mod that fixes that?
