Most fun Civ to play as?

I've always wanted to like Portugal, but I never seem to start in anything resembling even a decent starting location with them, I don't know if it's bad luck or what, but it's honestly uncanny. Do you find they start in relatively poor areas?

I like the Aztecs for a couple of reasons:

1. It's just fun to be rewarded for killing things, even if you don't actually want to conquer cities.
2. It's actually a nicely balanced civ. Obviously nice for war due to the culture bonus, but also good for growth with their UB. I like having flexibility in how to play a civ.

That's why I love Aztecs. If it's tight neighborhood, go aggro. If not, switch to peaceful culture\science victory (if you get lakes, even better!) and use UA for barb hunts and some "peaceful" wars from time to time (like when you should convince AI that that city location should be yours).

Oh and they usually start in jungle\forest, so you'll probably have extra science when university kicks in, and if forest, you can grab some wonders.

My favourite Civ to pay as up until recently had been India - I really like to play them super tall and create three or four GIGANTIC cities.

This until recently when I tried Pacal (Mayan) for the first time! Wow! I love their UA. It's so much fun with all the extra GP! In a recent game I had Japan as a neighbour and Nobaunaga forward settled right on my borders and on the coast. My next Long Count bonus I chose a GG and popped a Citadel just outside my borders, two tiles from Tokyo - leaving it with about 3 workable tiles!

Egypt's more fun than a barrel of monkeys with that UA. Toward the end of the game, wonders even start to feel mundane. Like I'm collecting cats or Pokemon cards. And then I just smile, and I'm like, "Another one? Oh, sure, why not?"

Trying out Russia right now-- the krepost seemed pretty useless initially, but I'm seeing the benefits of having it in frontier cities with a liberty start. The added :c5production: from strategic resources is a huge boon to liberty, as well.

Egypt too : if I have marble start, let's go. With pantheon for ancient/classical wonders. Excellent below Immortal, not fun in Deity.
Faith and Happinness. May choose Tradition or Liberty, Piety or Honor to do what I want.

1. Maya - Good UA n UB, nice colors n music. Cool leader!
2. Byzantine - Gamble with religion
3. Spain - Gamble with map
4. Aztec - Killing for culture
5. America - Love the extra sight.

Mayans are really fun with the options you get from your choice of Great people. Early exploration with a Great Admiral? Enhance my religion right away with a Great Prophet? Get a Great Scientist nearly as early as Babylon? Choices, choices.

Shoshone aren't really that unique, but I find them fun because playing them almost feels like cheating. Get whatever I want from ruins, get instant access to all the best tiles for my cities, and get early access to composite bows.

I have a hard time branching out, I usually play as Rome, Egypt, or the Dutch. Love the polder, especially after Economics.
