I currently like Demigod the best. It's quite challenging, and I have a good shot of winning. It's probably the most fun, IMO.

I like to play Regent because it's the only level where the AI doesn't cheat :) I may have to go up one level if I find it too easy. I also play with a rule that you can only have one Army in the field at one time no matter how many cities you have. I don't think you can impose this through the editor so I just bind myself to the rule since Armies are so overpowered (especially in TETurkhan's awesome mod which allows you to have 20 units in one army)

Deity. It's not an easy auto win, but doesn't require the tiring level of attention Sid does.

Of course that depends on start position. The diety games in gotm are usually made too easy i think. Maybe a level between Deity and Sid would be best. (there is quite a large gap between them)

Pssst!

Be careful with that statement (AI cheat). You might get into trouble :D

Emperor too. Or even Monarch on pangea maps. On archipelago, Demi-god may be better (archipelago being much easier).

The higher the level, the poorer the gaming experience gets. On Deity or Sid, you need to MM everything. You must also at least sometimes rely on either luck or rerolls (restarting until you get a good initial location). Furthermore, you can't build any wonders for much of the game. You get only barbs from goody huts (when you can grab one!). You have little choice about strategy (kill or die: peaceful building rarely cuts it). Etc.
The only reason to play these levels is... to lose a game at least occasionnally. That way, you come back with fire in the eyes! It's not good to win every time. Your ego tends to inflate...

The AI still cheats on regent (one of many examples: it still know where all the resources are going to appear).

I swear I have seen two AI civs mobilizing against another civ before they declared any military alliance or even before they declared war. Maybe they it's because they are both following the same algorithym and both determined it was time to attack that civ.

The AI just doesn't start with any advantage or disadvantage at the beginning of the game.

Monarch. I can play Monarch on auto-pilot, and reasonably quickly (and of course sloppily...).
I can beat Emperor, but don't play day-to-day games at it - it requires too much concentration. I reserve Emperor for SGs, C/GOTMs etc.

Emperor is peachy. I have to pay attention, but I don't usually have to obsess. Monarch is ok if I'm just killing time. Deity ... I can win, but I have to be really careful. Stupid mistakes and bad luck get me killed sometimes, and I find I'm more restricted in how I have to play. For example, I don't generally feel comfortable letting the AI get far ahead in tech on Deity if I can help it, whereas in Emperor I frequently let myself fall behind for various strategic reasons and get away with it.

I haven't played enough Demi-god (no completed games yet) to know for sure, but I think it might be good.

Emperor is my favorite because it is still easy enough to win 'all random' and with different variants.

Deity requires a more methodical playing style.

My point exactly. The higher the level, the fewer the possibilities. That's a shame. Higher levels should require a better use of all game components; instead of that, most of the time you find yourself relying on the military aspect only, because that's the only area where you can still compete with the AI.

I'm not that crazy over MM, so anything above monarch is a little stressfull for a game I've played for so long now.

Monarch owns all, its fun fun fun fun fun fun and most will agree, althogh the challenging aspect of 'Sid' makes that fun!

Clearly Emperor for me. Still a bit of challenge, but forgiving of mistakes and does not need obsessive attention. Good for entertainment.
I am trying to master DG at the moment. But I still loose as often as I win. It is fun but also frustrating on many occasions and it is work.
I've tried diety on a number of occasions but that is just to hard (yet) for me.

I perfectfully agree with this. :)
Also I like demigod the most because I could win with ( almost ) every civ. On deity unfortunatelly I couldn't manage without agr,exp or seafaring trait ... :mischief:
