Most influential languages in 2056

I can't believe people are saying German, French, Japanese, and even Esperanto but forgetting Arabic??? How can you say Esperanto and not Arabic? :gripe:

Anyway, my bet is on English, Chinese, Spanish, Hindi, Arabic, and Russian probably in that order.

Arabic is going to be of absolutly no use whatsover as soon as we change from a petroleum based economy. (or the oil runs out without us being prepared, which ever comes first!)

Whatever language our alien conquerors speak, so we'll say Klingon just for reference point.

Since the conquest will result in a fragmentation of the population, I believe that each region will end up adopting one language in order to maintain communication in rebellion. So let's say English (North America, Indian Subcontinent, Australia and Europe including Russia), Mandarin (Eastern Asia), Spanish (South America)--not Portuguese. I suspect Brazil will take heavier losses in the invasion than the other nations. Africa's a question mark.

So in order:
Klingon
English
Mandarin
Spanish
?

Just curious, what makes you think our alien invaders have a think for wiping out Brazilians?

It will still be important no matter what.

ChrTh, Everything will be more important than Klingon.

Just like in Independence Day, they're going to target the heavily populated areas first. Brazil has more population tied up in heavily populated areas than the rest of the continent.

Also, the aliens despise Soccer/Football.

I don't believe English can improve much more than the stage it achieved today.

As for Japanese, Portuguese and German, those languages are indeed spoken by many people but in a relative small number of countries. I believe the German language's influence reached its peak in the end of the 19th century when it was the lingua franca of all Central Europe.

I do believe on the other side that Mandarin is the language which will increase the most in influence, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Spanish will also increase its influence. As for french, well, it will never find back its glory days of the 18th century, but I still believe that language will remain strong in influence, and may even increase. French main advantage being that it's a language spoken in a large number of countries located on all the continents.

Everyone will be speaking either english or Chinese by then, maybe Hindu.
Completely false assumption. If there are still people who speak French in Quebec after 250 years of English language domination in North America, then I really fail to see how all languages in the world could disappear in 50 years.

In order: English, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin... I don't really have a fifth. Hindi, I guess, but only for the cultural implications of learning it, since Indians know English anyway.

The rest are very obvious.

English(a generally accepted language no doubt), Chinese(the influence of over a billion speakers with communities around the world), Hindi(India's rising status as an improtant power), Spanish(Latin Amrican influence and it is already a major language), Arabic(the influence of the Middle East).

Agreed. The idea was to take note of universally spoken second languages.

Of course languages will change and incorporate aspects of other languages, but there will still be something one can call "French", and something one can call, "German".
