I don't know how many xp it had, but an AI once got a pretty neatly leveled Acolyte after I destroyed a staggering stack of high-level Confessors (spirit guide) while that one Acolyte was the only unit they had left after one turn.
I've always found Cultists to be the best cure for pyre zombies, although of course it only works near water. The damage done by their explosions seems to be linked to how strong they were when they died, so area effect spells are a life saver. The Air 2 spell probably works well too.
Dave I actually didn't have the valour promotion, but I am suspecting that you get awarded XP for defensive strikes, which I suppose ends up giving me an extra XP per kill.
