is there a way to prevent mouse over extra info from disappearing? every game i play, it stops working and i have to double click on a city to get it working again. sometimes it lasts for a bit, sometimes it stops working after a few turns and it's a really annoying bug that's existed since the beginning. why won't firaxis address this bug?

This is quite an old bug, kind of makes me cry its stil around, i even think happens more often on BTS than before  I just hit Esc key twice everytime it hapens

for example during trades, you want to see how many beakers the tech costs, or during random events you have to choose between 2 outcomes and it stinks because all of a sudden your mouse over info stops working...

plus its not a very occasional thing, it happens very frequently every few turns on BtS

Just mouse-over the flag doesn't work for me (or mouse-over anything else for that matter). What do work (for me at least) is to use ALT-TAB (getting to the desktop) and then ALT-TAB to get back to the game (or use the task manager).

like i said, the best method of getting your tool tips back is to double click one of your cities and go back to the main screen.

OK - this sounds different from the problems I've experienced - I've never lost tooltips from a menu or a pop-up.

Could you people experiencing this problem please provide some more info? What graphics card do you have? What drivers? Is there anything that you can tie the cause down to? Can you provide a screenshot? Is it ever repeatable?

Ainwood, you can't be serious?

Anyhow, the small information boxes that appears next to a choice you have (be it production selection, tech selection, etc.) that gives a little more information about the choice sometimes dissappear. This have been an issue ever since civ4 vanilla. I have changed graphic card three times during this time (all nvidia, now 8 series) and I always use Nvidia drivers of the latest model. I have friends (yes I do) and they say the same thing. I haven't been bothered with it so much since in vanilla and warlords the info is mainly used for production selections and tech selections and I know so much about civ that I know this stuff or can check if up with civ...pedia. But the new events that gives you choices and no information appears can be tricky. These text boxes are actually used constantly in the game (I belive) when you mouse-over something, but the problem with the events are that you must choice, you cannot do something else (like check inside a city) and then go back. So in another thread here gave me the tips with the ALT-TAB solution (something I now do quite often during a game, say countless of times).

Edit: Since it happens so often I can't remember if it is ties to a specific action or so, I just go: Oh no not again ALT-TAB ... ALT-TAB, now what was the choices with that reward?

This happens to me regularly also, every few turns or so. It also disables my scroll wheel, which I feel almost debilitated without :( I usually just ALT-Tab and ALT-Tab again :( Glad to see I'm not the only one with the issue, but does anyone else get the scroll-wheel issue? Happens at the same time as the mouse-over info disappearing, and returns at the same time also, so I'm guessing the issues are linked.

Ainwood, lucky you, perhaps you have the right pc configuration (I mean OS, hardware, software, etc.) to play civ4. Why I was surprised is that I haven't met anyone that don't experience this (and have done so through the entire civ4 history). I have seen posts here that say that they haven't, but not many (perhaps that was you, can't find that thread just now, but that person also talked about the flag).

I don't know why this happens and not to you, perhaps the game cannot stand my mouse, which by the way is a quite common USB Optical mouse (nothing strange there). On the other hand perhaps this is it, do you use a special mouse (special brand, etc.). I mean, since if you add the other threads about this, it seams to be alot of us and a few of you (you = you who doesn't experience this), so what is your hardware/software (what do you do that is right).

On the other hand, only a small percentage of the civ4 community has seen/answered any of these threads, so perhaps this only has happen to me and a few others. In another post (long time ago, I believe) I think someone of the creator staff answered and was also surprised.

A couple of things it can be *Graphic card (I have/are using Nvidia 6 and 8 series) *Mouse (I use an USB optical 5 button ms mouse) *The Game (it is the game and alot of you do experience this, but haven't look at the textboxes much so you haven't thought about it) * Other (?).

PS (to reclaimer122)
Haven't thought about it (since I usually don't use the wheel much) but now when you mention it, yes I think it is disabled when this happen.

Why not?

I haven't seen this issue. The plot pop-ups (the info in the bottom left) occasionally disappears, but its fixed by mousing-over the flag.

I have not had pop-ups fail on menus etc (although I can't say I use them often).

are you SERIOUS?????!!!!! how can you not use the tool tips often? don't you care how many beakers a certain tech costs while trading or what a certain tech enables? those are things that all disappear with the flaky mouseover tool tips and for you to not notice is pretty impossible. with BtS random events, we are even more screwed when we have to choose outcomes.

and yes, the scroll wheel doesn't work when the tool tips stop working also.

IMO, this is not a hardware issue. i've had both ATi and nVidia cards that have this problem and used 3 different mice and they all have the problem. this is a problem with the game ITSELF and i doubt anyone who says they don't have this problem.

I'd also like to add the scroll is only disabled in menus, but zoom in/out still works fine with my wheel even when it doesn't work anywhere else. I think it must be a problem with the GUI, as so many people with different hardware configurations experience this bug.

Well, this is the first time I've heard of this bug. I've certainly never noticed it myself, on any of the three PCs I've played Civ IV on. And one of those didn't even meet the minimum system requirements!

When I bought Civ (along time ago) I noticed it, but I didn't care so much because the info wasn't that important. In the beginning I didn't know that much about civ4 so I checked civilopedia alot, and then I knew alot so I didn't care so much because of that. So now Civ4 Beyond the Sword, and there is new info text to learn about, but you can't check Civilopedia (I talking about the extra info about quests) becuase there is no info there, so I suddenly remember, Oh yes that old bug, I have played civ all those years and have totally forgotten about it, until now.

In another thread, some people mentioned the flag story. Actually I have started to believe that we are not talking about the same info boxes.

Some people have mentioned the city story. Those people should know that there are times when you can't leave your popup boxes until you have chosen something, so how do you "go in" to a city and back again then?

Some people have mentioned that it happens if you have activated the "Right-Button Menu" option. I have played both with and without that, and it doesn't help.

Can it be a European - US version problem or a Euro OS - US OS versions problem. I mean I have talked to the people I know (I mean physically know, not internet know) and they have a blend of newer and older nvidia cards, newer and older ati cards. We all have experienced the same problem and like me nobody has cared for this bug until now, mainly because of the event options when you can't read the what the choices will mean since that extra info box isn't there.

To provide a save for this is pointless since if it doesn't happen to ainwood it doesn't happen so if his pc is the perfect one for civ and it's textboxes, he can't check the save anyway. A screenshot is quite pointless, a screenshot doesn't say much, except of cause to show that the extra info box that should appear for example when you mouse-over a event choice telling you how much gold you have to pay, etc. isnt' there. I do believe that we are mature enough so we trust all of us that have experienced this without one (but hey I can do it if that what it takes for some poeple to belive us).

A Theory:

Since this doesn't happen to anyone "important" (admin, moderator, firaxis personal) it doesn't happen and since a save is impossible here (if you don't experience this on your pc, you will not experience this no matter what save you use) and a screenshot can always be argued "that you don't have your mouse exactly on the right spot, etc." the problem is with me (and the rest of the people that experience this), We have done something. Checked an option that you shouldn't, etc., etc., etc.

Wait now I got the answer, the info boxes are done in a certain new cool colour and we have an eye disease that means that we can't see the spectra the textboxes are made in.

PS
Thank ... that I can release my anger on the mongols at the moment.
