movie on a CD in a DVD player?

Not positive, but I believe it will work if the movie is in MPEG-2 format. You won't be able to get much on it though, certainly not a full movie. a CD-R is about 1/7th the size of a DVD-R, 1/14th the size of a dual-layer DVD.

DVD players now support Xvid and DivX formats now
so yes

Ok, good, which means I would have to re-download it. It is legal, Star Wreck: The Pirkinning, I want to watch it at my dads but I have dial up there and he has a mac and a projecotr so it's a mini home theater.

Nah, just get a converter, that should be easier.

And I quite often find (and use) films encoded specifically for VCD's.

(Though the quality is never quite as good, the resolution on your TV is quite low, so a video thats in a tiny box on your PC, would look pretty decent on your TV).

yup, you can do it. easiest was is to do a VCD. i have a couple movies on VCD, and they work great! you'd never know the diffrence

VCD = Video CD, and is simply any video converted into VCD quality and which most DVD players can play. There's also Super VCD which I think is better quality, but still very low when compared with DivX/Xvid.

Try this to find some:

I myself use ProCaster DVD-002 which is a very cheap player which can play almost everything, and also supports subtitles. I've been using it for 4 months now, and it works perfectly.

yeah, what he said. i would not know about super VCD having better quality... i have a really old and crappy tv

I just checked the ones at school and they say Compact Disk Video on them, so it should work. Also, if I have no money to spare for a new DVD player as I already have one and it probably plays them as it was a 100 dollars or something compared to a $30 one here that can so it should play them.
