MP Help

Hey, so I got Civ III Complete on XP, and when I try to play multiplayer, the game does two things: Either doesn't respond, or freezes at "Assigning Team Colors". Help?

Could it be that you're behind a router and some ports need to be opened manually? I'm really shooting in the dark here.
