In the world of tomorrow!!
I don't know what all the fuss is about HAVING to have Multi-Player. I never used it in Civ II; and I'll very likely not use it in Civ III (or civ3X... or civ4 or whatever). It's not that practical. Takes up too much disk space for too few people to use. any comments?

its not the space that matters, but the fact that in late game you could easily wait 10 minutes or more for 1 guy to make a turn. it would just take WAY too long.

any comment? LOTS!

Go and try CivII MP ONCE! just once! It is waaaaay more fun to play against human - imagine all the backstabbing possible, but also trust. Fair but complex deals - like city trading, giving back of stupid culture flips (there can be a flip-save-treaty!!!) - all that isn`t in CivIII w/o MP!

I LOVE CivII MP, and I can`t wait for CivIII MP, even though the game swill take AGES to complete!

I am in the camp of 'does not matter to me'. As it is now, it takes me weeks to complete a game because of my schedule, setting aside the time to play a multiplayer game is just not feasible for me.

I grant you that the game would be MUCH more enjoyable playing against human opponents as opposed to the AI.

BTY: i would put good money down that MP will be and expansion as opposed to a patch I just hope that other advantages and improvements that come with that EX will be available to us who will not purchase it in patch form. I doubt that though.

I guess it will be the same procedure as with CivII. MP will cost you, but all patching included in that version that is necessary for Single Player will be avaiable in a seperat patch, too.

If all turns are Simultanious in the Civ3 MP, then it won't take so much time as you will do your turns at the same time.

I'm looking forward it so I can play with my friends in Lan at home, and some I have started to be friends with here on the Forum.

I would love to play MP - never have with any game (but I'm not a real experienced gamer by any standard.) The only thing I worry about is the time it would take.

Anyone who's played MP games, how long do they take? I assume map size/# of players/ etc all factor in, but is it typically done in a sitting? I can't find time to play any game of Civ3 in a sitting and that's with the computer making opponents moves a lot faster than I (and presumably most human players) make mine.

For the record, I'll buy any expansion pack that comes out. I really enjoy playing this game and, factoring hours of use against cost, it's cheaper than most other entertainment options, including television.

If I ever manage to get a few weeks of time where I can justify sitting on my duff and gaming, then I will buy MP for Civ III. Otherwise it just won't ever fit into my schedule, no matter how much I want to fight against another person.

If you've never played civ2 mp,then you have missed the best version of the game....so far.

..but...logistically thinking,Civ3 has some major hurdles in it's way for mp.There is a huge amount of info that needs to be sent back and forth.Even very early turns may take forever. You'll definitely want/need top of the line processors and internet connections.Looks like it will/would be either some kind of simul element or mainly pbem.2 player games might be doable...but beyond that.....we wait and see for now....don't forget,if mp does come to civ3,there will be a mountain of bugs to sort thru. Its gonna take some time and some talent to make it work.

question is:how much time do they have before its too late?

Looking at the size of the save games unzipped then zipped I can either see your internet connectiong being taxed to the max or your processor as they shrink the file sizes down....but I am one waiting for MP. I get agreevated playing Monarchy....maybe I need to drop back to Regent.

that is a little closed minded u think? .... i didnt play civ2 much multiplayer, i played Alpha Centuri quite a bit on lan (becasue the server was untenable) and i played Call to Power a bit on the net

with CTP u could join a game in progress and take the reigns of an AI player (and also quit and the AI take over) in AC u could have similtainious turns so that made the game soooo much quicker!! and in both u could check out your citys and change production orders and whatnot when u were waiting for others

they all had optional time limits on your turns so u dont get the wait for someone for 10 min thing happening ... and as stated above ... diplomacy REALLY comes into its own in multiplay!! .... and dirty backstabbers can be remembered game after game

and just imagine .... getting to trade 1 luxiery for 1 luxiery :o ... imagine the novelty of fair deals!! lol ... imagine someone helping u just to try to hold up someone else bashing u .... the unfortunate thing is tht is all we can do :( imagine :( ... and perhaps that is all we will be able to do

I barely have enough time to play Civ. much less find the time to get the scheduals of 4 - 8 people to jive just to play. If I want to do that I schedual a board game of 'Civilization'. It's good to get together with friends to play a game. I just don't want to do it behind a CRT. I would rather get together and socialize .

Being on this board is a form of socializing.....so why the italics? To each their own, but I hope MP comes out soon since I dislike the way the game plays with the computer....I would much rather play versus ppl.

Killer, don't refer to other players as "game swill". We may take ages to complete, but we are human like you. I feel grossly offended:lol:

MP will make what is now a 4 of 5 star game a solid 5!

I for one, tend to become bored with even the best single player games after awhile. The AI become predictable and pretty soon it’s more tedious than fun. MP will add a whole new element to the game, Unpredictability. And, if done right, game play shouldn’t suffer too much. I doubt that huge maps will be played much but standard and smaller maps should be acceptable.

If you want to see how an MP turn based game can work, check out Stellar Crisis. It’s free on the Internet. Granted it’s not as involved as Civ3, but it show that it can work.

I would love to see an MP version of civ3. Sure it would take forever and a day, but as long as you're playing somone you know you can just save your game and pick it up later just as with single player. My cousin and I have had the same civII gold game going for about two months now. We put in a half hour here or there when we are both free.

Personally my favorite way to play civ II gold was "hotseat" mode with my wife. That was fantastic for people who want to compete (or cooperate) with a human player but don't have access to two computers. So I just hope firaxis puts a hotseat mode in when and if MP comes out.
