for what you're looking for i would probably go with the sandisk sansa:

it is like the other sandisk your looking at but doesn't have voice recordeing, it has a nicer screen and better button layout. also it is sd expandable so you can add an sd card for more memory

I considered that one as well. I like the look, size and expandable memory however it isn't compatible with win98se so I scratched it off my list.

Don't get anything small. Go for at least 6 GB.

I don't want one of these devices enough to make me willing to pay the money for anything over 1gb. The HDD machines just aren't in the budget as I just fixed all four brakes on my car.

So it's either a 512mb, 1gb, or nothing....
