This expansion was just released a few days ago. Has anyone played it yet? Would you recommend it?

Not yet but MTW was great and from the review I read, Viking Invasion seems to be the typical expasion where it is a slight improvement and if you liked MTW then you will like the expansion.

The combat in MTW is great, but the diplomacy and admin isn't. Nothing like EUII. I'll get the Viking Invasion expansion in a few months, when the price has went down. I'm a cheap Scotchman :)

Well, I just got VI, and I must say it's an improvement. The new campaign that lets you fight for control of the British Isles a lot like the original Shogun: Total War and less complicated than dominating Europe. Diplomacy is less important, and fighting is more important. It's closer to the true spirit of Total War.

Calgacus, I agree with you, diplomacy in MTW can be extremely annoying. Too many diplomatic units, they should just have priests, assassins, and emissaries. My provinces always tend to become literally covered in foreign agents who seemingly perform no function.

Are there more provinces for the British Isles now?

Oh yeah! There are at least 50, I didn't make an exact count (Norway, Denmark, and Normandy are also included). The Old English/Celtic names are used, so everything is hard to spell and pronounce. There's also a multitude of factions with which you can use to achieve domination. There's the Saxons, Welsh, Northumbrians, Vikings, Scots, Picts, Irish, and rebels.

I'm afraid I won't be getting much sleep tonight. :scan:

Apparently Assassins are now more powerful which is unfortunate as I have friends who will build around 10 assassins and then order them to attack enemy Kings at the same time, so that they will be successful with one assassin and then they can kill any new king until the enemy nation collapses into rebels.

I must confess that i've done this before. Usually I don't, as it's very time consuming and it's more fun to fight them in battle. Sometimes if a faction is Island-bound with a navy preventing me from invading, then i'll launch an assassin attack, but this rarely happens.

The Total War combat is absolutly the best, the AI, diplomacy basically everything but comabt could use some major work.

If they could master all the other stuff then the Total WAr series would be incredable.

The tech tree in MTW is extremely complicated, and buggy. The game came with one, but I can't seem to find one online.

VI is amazing! But, then again, the original MTW is also amazing! The diplomacy sucks, but then again, diplomacy in the actual Middle Ages came almost exclusively through the sword, so it isn't entirely inaccurate, although I noticed in the Viking campaign that a faction who's butt you are kicking seems much more likely to offer a cease fire.

I haven't even gotten around to a normal campaign yet, and probably won't for awhile, although trying the Sicilians seems like a lot of fun. I know that I could have modded them in as playable, but I'm not big on modding games. Playing a modded game distorts the product of a game company and makes you more likely to buy bad games. But I digress.

I'd say VI has already been well worth my $30. The Viking campaign was very well done, and I can only assume the changes to the regular campaign are as well. There are very few games which even pique my interest enough to consider buying, and most of those fall woefully short in the entertainment department. M:TW and VI are an awesome game, and I would implore anyone to go to their nearest game store RIGHT NOW and buy them.

Has anyone else noticed how the vikings are so amazingly unbalanced compared to other nations? Their landsmen and huscarles go through enemy formations like a buzz saw. It's amazingly easy to win the game while playing as the vikings on most difficulty levels.

I've played against the Vikings as most British factions, and come to realize that the best strategy to use against the Vikings is masses of archers to thin their ranks, armored spearmen to hold their assault troops in place, and mounted nobles to counterattack. Viking Carls and landsmen don't have the best defense, so attacking them with mounted nobles, who have great attack, seems to work.

Yeah, throw a few Jom's Vikings and Berserkers into the mix, the eney doesn't stand a chance. I've defeated over 6000 enemy troops with 16 of these units. Huscarls can do it all. But then again, the Vikings were noted for their lightning-fast raids and the like. I think it was made this way so that playing another faction has you quaking in your boots at the thought of Vikings attacking you. It does make them incredibly easy to play, but money management can be a problem once you end up at war with everyone. Smash-and-Grab only goes so far.

I usually invade the 3-4 rebel provinces in southeast England as soon as possible, then spend all the money I have constructing basic farms and other agricultural improvements. It might take a while, but eventually these provinces will become extremely productive, and they make a good foothold from which to strike at the Saxons or the Mercians.

Yeah, I have Mediaeval and V.I. - love it. Not been getting to sleep until about three a.m. this week.
Currently playing Middle Period Italians - hard to expand but the French have just fragmented and I've picked up a few provinces from them. Going nicely for the moment....usually famous last words.

Just brought VI after watch the Matrix reloaded :) Pretty good so far, playing as the Saxons and I've already wiped out the Welsh but I am worried about the Mercian armies to the East and the poossiblity of the Vikings appearing nearby. I think I will churn out some spies to investigate their armies.
