Multi-session G&K game (GMT+12 @ 8PM)

Small+Quick+Lake?

Lake map has no area wasted as map edge or water. Players are equally distant to each other, and each one should have at least 3 neighbours to check balance of power.

I don't mind playing on standard speed, however keep in mind that units fight for a lot longer on standard speed before being obsolete so the odds of war are much higher (hence my reason for really disliking epic or marathon - turns into a really poor version of an real time strategy game instead of a civilization building game).

I've also noticed that in multiplayer the maps tend to be small or standard size at most and that really skews the civic choices towards tradition rather than liberty (3-4 cities is okay on small for a long time on a small map but not so much on a large map). The nature of multiplayer I guess.

Yeah, I also find small map too small, expand to 4 cities and you are in the hate list of other civs, (like the Egypt-America war). Standard+ quick speed seems ok balance against war incentives.

Standard size and quick should be fine; we'll do standard speed when we get over 6 players.

I want to check out some unfamiliar maps: frontier, ancient (or crater?) lake, even tilted axis...just to see what they're like. I realized last night instead of playing and scouting them, I need to download the Worldbuilder program, so I can see what they generate right away.

E does the Lakes map wrap east to west? I think that's a good type to have, then no one has a corner to build up in.

You can start in information era and get Satelite tech to examine every map that WORKS in MP :)

Yeah, Lake does that.

Ah, good idea, I hadn't thought of that either!

Do they not have future start anymore? No need to answer, I'll see soon enough.

Actually, that way is pretty tedious, you still need six turns for the fifth policy, don't even start with a university.... Looking at the world builder now, which is instant!

Unfortunately it doesn't use the map sizes, you have to specify hex width and length...have to see if I can find the defaults somewhere....

One thing I'd like the veterans to do is do their best to help the newer players become better. Tips should be helpful, but maybe a teamer would be another idea? Nothing like actually seeing what the other guy actually does in a game as a way to learn (or being told / asked / strongly encouraged).

Best way to learn is to die horribly to someone else. Teaches you not to avoid building defenses!

Talking about finer points like boosting production, best use of terrain and buildings, using specialists, generating cash, upgrading, wonder strats or combos, good policy choices, early build priorities, use of flanking and defensive terrain in battle, beliefs...and so on.

Though of course I agree your point is a basic and very valid one. :)

In that case oh mighty Onan, I would be the first to line up to learn from a great veteran such as yourself since I can't seem to ever generate enough cash, use specialists or steal every wonder!

Oh please, I'm not claiming I know the game inside out, and no one can ever pull everything off. You, EEE, and Tabarnak would be the vets I'm talking about, and I guess I include myself, though I'm not a systematic student of the game.

Improved players means better games. :)

Yes, I learnt a lot simply by watching Tab's and CivBuilder's video, I am a student of MP as well.

For example, I just posted in another game thread about how I almost never use trade posts. Specialists I most often run are scientists, to boost teching and GSs, though occasionally I'll run engineers for production and/or a GE for a wonder I want.

With freedom though I think you can base a decent strategy around specialists, and if you can get haggia sophia and statue of liberty, and of course the rationalism policy that boosts the science of all specialists is good too, then it can really get rolling.

Cash mostly is settling rivers and resources, and getting currency ASAP. I suspect it would pay (no pun intended) to specifically run a cash city, with the right buildings and specialists, but it may be situation specific and I've never actually done this.

For example do you guys try to specialise cities at all? Income city, food/GP city, production city, science or culture city, etc? Or just develop each as terrain suggests? My development I think is fairly ad hoc.

Stacking specific wonders in particular cities can help with targeted GP production, too.

I'm not bad at micro managing and I know how to war. My problem is that I dont have the experience with speed. I've played sp so long and I like to take my time. I'm actually winning wars in GMR games for example, but when we come to the normal mp games I just need to get my ass handed to me a few more times. Learn by doing. Or learn by dying. Both works.

I do ask for advice now and then. Both on and off the field. Tried to learn ics from Is not long ago for example, and E writes a lot of good small tips around the forums. Tabs guides are always good to read, and so on.

I'm just assuming you are talking about me cause other "mp newbies" havent joined yet, but these games are expanding and I love it! :)

I was talking about Jake and Heinage, too. I don't know what their MP experience is.

I'm not the best at microing, even. I mostly leave it on default unless I'm maxing production.

Yes, it's definitely nice to have more players joining us.

I belive Jake has some experience already. Might be wrong. Why dont I just let him explain it himself?

Heinage havent joined yet. :p

Jake is experienced, he has good defense last game but got surprised by German UU push.

We can try some variety here, so this team concept works fine for 6 players, next game we can shift back to normal play to see how good the results are :)
