Multiplayer Alliances

Some friends and I want to play a network game where it's strict 2v2 from the start, and we were wondering which option to hit... we didn't bother trying and spent our time on a Free For All, but now I'm extremely curious.

We want to be able to choose our allies, not get them randomly assigned... please do let me know.

under options hit permanent allliances.
then align your number with your allies (the one to the right of your name in the game creation screen) and align enemys to one other number.
