but I've never actually played anyone before.
It seems kind of hard to play someone in a game that takes hours.

No, of course not. Actually, we do have a sub-forum dedicated to the Multi-players among us. It is located here. But you will find that many of us play only, or almost only, Single-player (against the computer).

For myself, I do sometimes play PBEM (Play By EMail). It allows you to play against other human opponents, but does not require constant on-line connectivity. On the other hand, each game can take a loooooooong time to finish. ;)

I was just wondering about that. Because when I lived in the dorms on campus, I used to play Civ II against other people there, but whenever I'd have to go somewhere, I'd just have to give up. Thanks for the info. I'll look into that because a couple people I know wanted to play, but our schedules don't coincide at all.

Well, you can save multiplayer games just like any other games, so it's not like you have to sit at the computer 10 hours straight to play a multiplayer game. :)

Plus some of the new game modes, such as elimination and regicide, in PTW can make games go quicker than normal. And I recommend playing simultaneous games, not turn based.

I almost managed to finish my first allied PBEM with donsig, but in the end the file became corrupted. It didn't matter much in the end though; I'd nuked the entire enemy civ (on its own continent), and we're invading the razing its cities. They'd only a few strongholds left anyway. :)

Shldn't this go to the MP forum though?

This Pentium 3 STILL has some life left in it. Got to it just as you posted. Moved. ;)

I play against the computer (XIII - not a word about my "old" computer! :p), but I also do play some multiplayer for the PTW beta test.

I bought Civ3 and PTW specifically for the purpose of playing by email against other human players.

After that I got seriously addicted to playing against the AI, though after six months and victory against seven AI's at emperor level, it is getting more manageable.

I have a PBEM game going now with 5 humans and 3 AI and it is moving very slow.

PBEM with one other human who you know is reliable plays much faster (still slow compared to against AI only, but you can get many turns depending on how often you check email).

ive been playin quite alot of MP games recently but have only ever finished one (on the beach map). am now playin by email and am NEARLY finishing games. have got a game going that wil be finished eventualy
:band:

Some of us have managed to finish several PBEM's. ;)

Note that they go quickest if you can be online at the same time and chat while you play and send the turns back and forth. In the early game you can get to turn 80 in a few hours.
