Multiplayer - won't it take intolerably long

That's nice to know. But I have no clue how to set up a game like that. What I mean to say is, could you do something like that right now, or do we gotta' wait until the big MP thing comes out? This sounds pretty cool, but I've never been able to start a game with control over more than one civ. Am I just a fool?

No, it's not possible yet, unless I'm a total idiot.. You'll have to wait for the freakin MP.. By the way, Alpha Centauri worked just fine with simultaneous moves.. But hotseat is fine as well.

Since I started this thing, I'll chime in again. I have played hotseat and online games in the past. In particular, I've played hotseat games of Heroes of Might and Magic that took a day to complete and were fantastic. But this is another matter. Later in the game, my civ turns take ten to fifteen minutes per turn, and that's playing against the idiotic computer A.I. Additionally, Hereos games ended after maybe one-fifth as many turns as it takes to finish a regular Civ III map.

I think a group of four skilled players would takes weeks of playing for three to four hours every night to finish a game. Just think about the war of attrition and stalemate centuries that would pass between human players, all slowly improving their lands on every turn with scrambling workers. Or think about the number of casualties that would be incurred to take a single city, when an intelligent human has put almost all their defensive resources on the vulnerable front lines. It would take a hell of a lot of swordsman to overwhelm a city with walls, ten spearman and five offensive units to initiate attacks when it was advantageous.

I look forward to hearing how this goes for the rest of you, but I'd be surprised if a group bigger than three completes any game on a regular map in anything approaching a sane amount of time.

That would be much better than the 'waiting for player <x> to complete turn'.

My only gripe, I think MP should a free download via a patch.

....but its not the same as real MP.Unless you are prepared to get up and leave the room each turn, you see the other players stuff.

PBEM is ok,but lacks that interaction that chat provides. In civ2 mp you could do all that on others turns. So the period between actual moving of units was frequently occupied with wheeling and dealing,or plotting with an ally, ETC.

It is a real easy hack to make Civ2 MP simul. It is in the civ2.exe.Just a small change to a .txt file iirc.It was going to be a part of the official release but was dropped when it was decided it wasn't working to the developers satisfaction. It never was "officially" put in as people were quite happy with tbs.

CivII MP was officialy implemented - I own a CD which says: "Civilization II Multiplayer" that offers all the gametypes - hotseat, LAN, Internet.......

Unlike a lot of you netheads, "she who must be obeyed" only allows me a small amount of time each day to "play those silly games" (why don't wives appreciate the finer things in life!).

Therefore, PBEM would be ideal for me, especially when the turns start to get a bit longer later in the game. However, the first hundred turns or so don't take that long to complete, and it would be frustrating to perhaps wait a day at a time just to complete a couple of actions.

So how about a hybrid system. Players could connect for a period of time at the start of the game to get it going a bit. Then, at some period later, the multiplayer could switch to PBEM, when there starts to get a bit more to do each turn.

Only trouble with PBEM is diplomacy - how would that work? How did it work with the hotseat version of Civ 2?

If a woman wouldn't let me play civ, I'd be all like "Hey woman! Get back in the kitchen! And make me some pie!" ;)

Seriously dude, why stay in a relationship where you can't do what you want to do. That's not love, that's slavery. Divorce the *****!

Now now...I'm sure there's some upside to the relationship! :)

What I would like to see would be on-line games which allow you to jump in or out, with AIs handling any sides not under human control at the moment. You could jump into a new game (or start one), play to 1AD, then go draw a bath for the wife while the AI takes over for you. When you come back you could hop into another game that's further along, choosing the game based on the year, type of game, # of humans on, and available (AI) civs.
:goodjob:

Maybe the solution is to have very large games (16 on a huge map) and everyone signs on to the game every day and uses their move and then they have all day (literally) to make a move. The problem I see is that you would forget what was going on in a certain game and games would easily take years to win

One word: EverQuest.

There are people that played that game for 24+ hours straight... and have over 300 days worth of playtime since the game's inception.... Thats 300*24hours of online time. There are DEFINETLY people with time enough to play MP Civ3 :)

Anyway, just my 0.02 :) I kicked my EQ habit over a year ago, and do not intend to try to get into multiplayer civ3 :)
