Mump3 - AWDG Standard Pangaea, take 4

The GL after the SoZ is very doubtful.
Is that galley on the west-coast empty?

That galley is a barb one, I don't think they ever contain units. In any case, it's been there for over 10 turns, so there's no danger.

The GL is a gamble, but we're building it in a good town this time, so we might still get it. Your call though, I don't think anyone will disagree if you consider it to be too unlikely to get it. I think you have 7 turns to switch to FP. Maybe you'll have had an army victory by then and build the HE.

I don't think the GL is necessary lost. The town building it is high shields and we could be lucky.
If we get the combination of SoZ/GL, we will have a very good shot this time

I could fit this one in today and will have the report up in a few hours after work

Checking current situation:
I give us about 30% to get the GL with the current prebuild but I think it is worth a try.
As Therat stated, we would be in very good shape if we can snug it.
MM some, mostly already suggested by CEO(financial) Mumpulus :D

IT: The Mongols seem to go for the barbs north and kill 2 of them this turn.
3 jap warrior step next to the furs in the north.

(1) Troop shuffling. We are a bit light on defense in the open south.
The good news is we are average in military strength compared to our enemies, pretty ok for BC-frames.

IT: Some Mongo-barb fighting and the japs move their 3 warriors next to Ebora.

(2) Lit comes in and we research Monarchy currently in 13 turns.
The GL will take 19 turns now.
Kill of all 3 jap warrior after bombardement, not one single promotion :( (3-0)

IT: Hmm, this must be some kind of self-fullfilling phrophecy as the Incans built the GL in Cuzco on this interturn.
I expected it in about 10-15 turns but it seems they just built it in a shield-rich capital.

(3) We found Burdigala (near the Wheat) and Catarac (on the coast) in the south.

IT: The Mongols seem to have cleared most of the barbs as a considerable amount of units show up in the
Ebora - August region. The japs send 2 new warriors.

(4) 8! of 9 cats fail by trying bombardement.
Nevertheless, we kill of 2 Mongols (archer and sword) near Ebora and the 2 jap warrior in the south, the later
giving us the first leader, Vercingetorix. We form a gallic army immediately (only 3 turns of the prebuild left in Lugdunum) (7-0)
We also advance on the Mongol city in the fofg east of Lugdunum.

Mump3_1.jpg

IT: We lose a spear that shielded a wounded ancient cav near Ebora (7-1)
A lot of Mongols east of August.
A new ancient cav is produced.

(5) We defeat 2 Mongol units in the woods of August. (9-1)

IT: A horse dies at Ebora, think it was a Byz. one. (11-1)
another 2 jap archer join the party at August.

(6) Our now filled gallic army has it's first victory at the Mongol-city Delandzadgad.
In the forest north of this town we kill 3 Mongol archer and 1 MDI (15-1)

IT: Lugdunum finishes Heroic Epic

(7) Our army takes Dalandzadgad defended by 2 spears and captures a worker. (17-1)
Our road network needs improvement, order another worker at Alesia.

IT: enemy archers move to August.

(8) We bombard and finish off the 2 jap archer north of Dalandzagad, bombard mongol archer but reveal 2 new japs in the fog.
Bombard and kill 2 Mongol archer in the north near Ebora. (21-1)
I will hand over the save at this point to let the next player decide where to advance next, don't want to commit someone on my last 2 turns.

We are now equal to Mongols in population (13%)
Monarchy in 5 turns, we should build up our infrastructure (I started already 2 libs, another in the capital is much needed)

The yellow arrows show the Mongol advance-lines.

Fantastic progress Mizar :goodjob: ! Now that we have an army, we can really start advancing. I'd get another settler factory going (not necessarily a four - turner, I just mean a mildly food rich city that builds a granary and becomes solely committed to building settlers, for example August), the Mongols won't last long and we'd like their land. Also a worker factory to connect the cities. We must decide, do we want to pillage the Mongol land (specifically, their iron) or just go razing junk towns for room to settle while waiting for a second army to go for the core? I would go for the second option, with HE, cats, and a bunch of warriors approaching us, it won't be long before we have a second army and can damage an unpillaged civ. Japan seems to be incredibly weak, they are only sending warriors to us. The Mongols however, are becoming powerful, so we must quash them.

too bad about the GL...guess we need to build up our empire the hard way...

but great progress on all other fronts, I love that army. Actually ACav and GS have the same stats...if we run short of GS, we can always form a ACav army.

By the way, do we want to revolt to monarchy or wait a bit? I guess we should wait a little to have more towns to not drown in unit costs. And I vote to not pillage buyt simply storm Mongolia.

Got it, will play tonight

ACav have better stats, they get an extra HP. That means we should probably make ACav armies, two vets are almost equal to 3 vet GS.

Revolt to monarchy depends on our unit support. The benefits of monarchy include a few extra shields for the couple of mined hills we're working, making a gold piece or two for rivered tiles with commerce bonuses, and corruption will be lowered insignifigantly. Cashrushing also, but I doubt we'll get the money to ever do much of that. Not sure if that makes up for just about halving our unit support. Since our GA is up, I see little point until our economy grows enough to make up for the unit support.

The japs seem week, they probably lack ressources, sending only archers and warriors.
But be aware of the Byzantines, they sent the exploring horseman in the south (the Burdigala region) and they haven't sent their usuall initial stack.

Because of the extra HP I was tempted to form a ancient cav army but circumstances prevented that. Our cavs were up in the northern cities, the leader was formed in the south and the prebuild was running out of time so I just took gallics to avoid wasting shields in Lugdunum.

Great work again, Mizar. The first hurdle has been taken: we have survived the period where we had no offensive troops. We can now play active defense and expand.

MM some, mostly already suggested by CEO(financial) Mumpulus :D

That has a nice ring to it :)

We are a bit light on defense in the open south

On the other hand, enemy focus has shifted now, so this shouldn't be a problem. I suggest moving the Army S-S-SE to the mountain, to check the situation there. I feel our short-term strategy will depend on the land form east. If we can reach the coast quickly there, and it goes north for a bit, we will be able to expand more quickly.

We should build up our infrastructure

Agreed. Not getting the GL will be no problem if we can keep one or two towns on infra at all times.

The yellow arrows show the Mongol advance-lines

I can't imagine a lot will come along the northern arrow (from the Mongols that is). That town must have been founded by the settler I beat to the August spot. The first Mongol sword turned up only very late, so I think their iron is up north, where they settled more recently.

The Mongols won't last long

I can't check the save, but if they have a lot of towns, I think they will last for a while.

I'd get another settler factory going

I wouldn't do that just yet. I don't think we can keep up with military, especially since we have some libs to build now (2 GS or 4 spears less). We musn't overextend. For the occasional extra settler I'd rather skim a city that grows too large to be practical. I agree we could go the way you propose if we had just 2 opponents. But as soon as we expand some more, and especially if we start razing towns, other AIs will be met, and then it will get ugly fast.

Do we want to revolt to monarchy or wait a bit?

I would revolt immediately. True, it will raise unit cost, but we can research the next few techs in 4 turns at a lower science rate, and grow in the mean time. Monarchy will allow that growth to be much faster, mostly by reducing waste, so we can build more troops to support our expansion.

I vote to not pillage but simply storm Mongolia

The civ adage goes "Population is power", but I like "Knowledge is power" better. As CFO ;) I'd invest a few turns letting the army explore the east. If we can find their iron, pillage it and we will be golden. I wouldn't raze too much, because that will draw in settlers from other civs. As soon as we can spare enough fast units to defend the entire front, then we can go ahead and start capturing. I'm not saying this can't go fast, I'm just advocating caution until we are reasonably certain we'll be able to hold our new acquisitions.

That means we should probably make ACav armies

I'd make one ACav army, that we can use as attack army. The extra HP means it will survive more easily, and will often be able to get an extra attack in before needing to heal, which can often make a difference to capture a town a few turns sooner.

After that, I'd make GS armies, because single ACavs have better survivability than single GS, because of the extra HP.

Some more random remarks:
  • After one or at most two more armies, please use a leader to rush the FP. Unless our exploration reveals a better spot, I think Dalandzagdad would be fine. I've always tended to wait too long to build the FP, but the few times that I did build it early, I always ended up with a markedly better situation. The earlier we have it, the stronger it will be.
  • Obvious spots for towns: the hills 2S of the Burdigala wheat; we can keep the Mongol town 3E of Burdigala; where the nearest Jap archer in the screenshot is; I wouldn't mind the other coastal town near Richborough; I also wouldn't mind a temporary town N of the Burdigala wheat for cats and workers. All these spots can be taken now without affecting our military situation, or even improving it with the Jap archer position. Be sure to have the army near when founding that.
  • Less obvious spots for towns: 2NE of August; together with Ebora that'll support the hills NE of our forward AC. I think that position will be an excellent point to hold while we fill up the east.

take out another 2 settler pairs

situation:
with orange and another Civ fighting we have a chance to harm Mongols further
Byz have not shown any stack as they might be the one fighting
all civs in the northeast except for Viking who are to the northwest

I would go after the gem city next, and then settle some gaps
we can keep the Mongol cities as their culture is low

Only just before this turnset I was happy that we had survived a lack of offensive units, so imagine my excitement now.

It seems we have a very peculiar land form, which should allow us to form two relatively narrow fronts, behind which we can establish a strong core. Because of this, I would now definitely prefer a quick FP, to cash in on the good situation we have here.

Goals I'd set for my turnset:
  • Take out Ulaanbaatar and Kazan, preferably get logistics in place to also keep Kazan. Consolidate that side by filling with towns.
  • Rush our FP in Daland, or maybe the new town the settler by Tabriz is heading for. I take it the nearest fogged plains tile is its target? Neither is blessed with lots of food, but production and commerce are both very good. Please advise.
  • Explore north a bit, to see what's beyond the jungle.
  • Meet the other civs. At this point we lack only 1 or 2 contacts I think. Might as well get them into war-mode too, and decrease our tech costs. We have a relatively easy position to defend now. Only drawback I see is that meeting the Orange civ might lead to ending their war earlier. Please advise.
I got it and I'll play in about 5 hours.

Roster
Mumpulus - Up
Own - On deck
Mizar
ThERat - Just played

Excellent progress Therat.
Pyramids is a very nice bonus :D
Lots of new friends but it's about time for them to find us all.
With the scape of the land we should be able to hold them off.

About the FP: Daland seems to be a bit mediocre, but Kazan looks inviting but I just looked at the screenshot.
About contacts: I think we will meet everyone fast enough and wouldn't push it. Too many initial stacks could still kill us.

Rat failed to notice that Mizar only played 8, and he conscientiously counted his 10 turns, so I get to play 2 extra turns, which I'll do gladly.

Byzantines and Japan have the same color, how nice. It would seem that the Vikings have been rising in power lately. Could they be the ones fighting the Oranges? They are the Dutch, and they are the only ones we haven't met.

0) 190BC
Go over our towns...
  • Karakorum: There are 2 scientists here, while they could all work contently. I see nothing in Rat's report. Do we want to starve them? Switch the reg spear to a worker. I think I'll keep the scientists to let it shrink. You never know how long it will take to eliminate the Mongols, and I see we have sold our Granaries, so we want to make sure.
  • Alesia: wow, it seems MM attention needed here is significant, having to take Lugdunum off a gold hill before growth in Alesia to get the last two shields needed for a settler... I'll make improving a third hill a priority.
  • Lugdunum: needs 1 more shield for 4-turn GSs. I get it from Entremont, which looses 1 happy face with no bad consequences. I will have to buy a few shields after Alesia borrows the gold hill though.
  • Richborough: aha, strike all the Alesia stuff, Richborough can swap a BG tile for a regular grassland, corruption takes the extra shield here anyway. I think I'm supposed to switch this library to a court when we get the tech.
  • Dalandzagdad: hire a scientist for one turn :)
  • Aged: more commerce and a scientist for one turn; the extra shield on growth will be corrupted
  • Ebora: hire a scientist
  • Burdigala: switch to more food for faster growth, and get 1gpt as bonus.
Science to 30%, still 3 turns to go on CoL.

Check our military...
  • We are strong compared to Inca, Germany and Mongols; average compared to Byz, Vikings and Japan
  • We have 60/40 on unit support.
  • 1 settler, 11 workers, 15 slaves, 4 warriors, 13 spears, 12 cats, 12 GSs, 6 ACavs and 1 army.
  • The Vikings have captured two Dutch slaves, so my guess was right
  • The Byzantines have captured one German slave
  • The Mongols also have two Dutch slaves
  • The Germans have lost a worker to both the Dutch and the Byzantines
  • Civ seems to hang a bit, apparently I'm checking too much. I can still get to the map view, but no controls seem to work. After further investigation, I find that the game only reacts to keyboard commands. I look up the keyboard commands on CFC, and manage to save the game and exit. :D
  • Restart the game
  • Wake up two cats in Aged, and send them towards the Inca galley. Rat mentions nothing about it having unloaded, so I will be tracking it.
  • Even though there are other units available to move, I do nothing else; I want to get a feeling on AI movement first.
And that concludes the 1 hour inherited turn. I really play too slowly. :)

IT
Byzantines move to settle near the north sea; Mongols seem more interested in someone else.

Entremont: GS > Library
August: Barracks > Spear

1) 170BC
GS army drops to 7hp on the first attack against a spear in Ulaanbatar. Put it on the hill and wait for reinforcements. Move forces out of Daland (which I renamed). [1-0]

IT
Dromon bombardment has started at Karakorum. A Mongol LB retreats a GS I exposed, an archer kills it [1-1]

Alesia: Settler > Settler
Lugdunum: ACav

2) 150BC
Found Ratae, starts worker

ACav kills LB [2-1]

IT
Lots of movement, but no attacks (I'm not going to keep mentioning the dromons). A Dutch galley comes from the north in the north sea. A Viking galley in the west sea.

CoL > Philo in 4 at 20%

Daland: Walls > Cat

3) 130BC
Meet the Dutch, who are gracious to us. I wonder why?
They have Philo, MM, HBR and Const on us, we have Lit on them. They have no iron and just three cities. Looks like we won't be getting the first kill in this game.

Two GS kill Byz or Jap warrior and archer by Karakorum. Army kills three spears in Ulaanbaatar, capture it for 2g, with two resistors, two workers and a cat inside. Start worker. ACav kills Mongol archer [7-1]

Switch Aged to a settler. Richborough to Courthouse. Buy 2 shields in Camu (also renamed) to save a turn on the library. August to GS.

Research to 10% still gets Philo in 4, it would be 5 at 0%. Lux also down to 10%. We're at +52gpt now, so I think I'll be rushing some things.

IT
Inca galleys stays put after I had blocked some tiles, and because the barb galley is in the way. Barb galley dies. Viking galley continues.

Lugdunum: GS > GS
Verul: GS > Worker (to skim)
Resistance in Ulaan has ended

4) 110BC
ACav kills Mongol LB. ACav kills Byz spear. GS kills Jap archer. GS kills Inca warrior. [10-1]

Rush worker in Karakorum, I want to start working on defense here. Rush worker in Ulaan, and set to starve (would be unhappy otherwise). Switch Lapurdum to settler and buy shields for 52g.

I'm stopping here for the night, will finish tomorrow evening.
