Muslims in Space

Soo... if they go to the far side of the moon. Should they pray upside-down or something?

EDIT: ummm... second question. How does the ramadam thing work? Can they eat only when the sun is above the horizont or it is the opposite? So... can they be in the moon during the ramadan, where 14 days a (lunar) month are sunny and 14 days are dark? And then, do they have to pray facing Mecca, nailed to the ceiling?

I was thinking if they better don't go to space, saving themselves from all that trouble, and also saving the taxpayers money to built a new hospital or something...

I don't claim to be an expert on Islamic prayer, but I don't see why it would be dangerous, unless an extra hand is needed and the prayer can't wait, and ridiculous is in the eye of the beholder, so to speak.

I would not trust a guy on my space station that had to kneel down and pray 5 times per hour. What happens in an emergency ?

can't they build a small replica of the mecca and brign it with them ? as for sunset and sunrise ...... add a light switch to the shuttle !

Problem solved!

Start praying, too!

Seriously, I don't know enough about Muslim prayer to really answer that. If they're praying and something goes wrong, would Allah be mad at them for stopping the prayer because of the emergency, or would he forgive them? I don't know, so I think that's where I let someone more knowledgeable step in.

In the last "what religion are you"? thread, 5 people claimed to be Muslim.

My point is more to say that if you feel you have to pray 80 times a day because of your religion, then maybe your priorities are not the ones required for a space mission.
Because Muslim prayer requires you to kneel and bow, and it takes longer than saying a Pater.

If they want to pray, no one has a right (IMO) to say they can't. 80 times per day is a bit excessive -- I'd think you'd just pray at the times that you would have prayed based on the location of the launch... The direction to face would still be an issue, but the number of times would be under control... but I really don't know anything about their religion so I can't make educated statements about it.

Couldnt they just use no gravity to their advantage and hoer in prayer? thus as the ship moves they will to. I may be wrong but wouldnt this keep them facing Mecca?

Good for them. If they can find a way to uphold their faith without actually reducing their abilities as astronauts, why shouldn't they? I know that I would still pray if I were in space, although I don't have time/position requirements. I'm fairly certain that most Muslims would say that God won't condemn anyone if they can't get it 100% right, but there is no reason not to put a little effort into it.

What if they pick a woman to be the astronaut? How will she be able to manage any of the controls with all of that garb floating around?

I remember asking one of my religion teachers (required) about prayer in space, he just said when you make it out there then we'll talk about it. Other students thought I was trolling.

It was funny

If someone tried to send me into space on a Russian mission, I'd be praying all the way up to orbit. :p
When was the last person to ride a Russian space shuttle die during a mission?

The woman was Hindu. What garbs do Hindu women have to wear?

It sounds like your teacher was an incompetent fool that didn't know what to say.
Well, considering that they're having a meeting with 150 "specialists" on this issue, the teachers seems more honest than anything else. How is he supposed to know this answer?
