Anyone play with this option on? I forget exactly what it's called but it's a lot of fun! I took all of shaka's cities but he had a large army still, so I got him to capitulate. He became a powerful ally and was more than happy to throw his army that couldn't be replenished at my enemies.:king: He was my personal slave army and I took all of monty's cities and had a second slave army! The problem was that since they weren't totally dafeated, they still had culture in their old cities.

So, does anyone else play like this? Please share!

I use it all the time. It can be a total pain to hunt down that last unit, but fun :P And if all else fails, get your hands on a caravel and RUN AWAY!!!

"Slave army" reminds me of a game-breaker back in Civ2: spies could bribe enemy units, so if you had a lot of gold it didn't matter what your tech level was, you could invade a nation with their own mechanized infantries after a bit.

I used to use this in all my games until Izzy stayed alive using 1 Spy hiding somewhere. And because of that she could not die. Since then I've not used that option.

The solitary spy is what makes this option broken. It would be great if it didn't include noncombatants (except settlers). I love it when one of my vassal armies find a new home by taking a barbarian/enemy city.

I played a HOF gauntlet once where I exterminated WvO -- except for one scout that was somehow always within the cultural borders of an AI that wouldn't OB with me and which I wasn't ready to DoW on. And he wouldn't negotiate peace, either. After what seemed like forever he finally did. I then had to wait even longer for him to OB with me. Once he did, I let his scout wander through my territory until he was boxed in a neutral area cut off from the rest of the continent by my borders. Only then was I able to DoW him and take him out completely. What a pain.

I'm glad your experience was more enjoyable!

Yes, it's called "require complete kill" and it's not worth it.

Do you know how when you're playing on a large map and you capture the AI's last city, only it wasn't their last city and they've founded an out-of-the-way city somewhere you can't find? Well, the "require complete kill" option is like that, only magnified. I played with that option once on a standard map, and it was a royal pain in the backside as I suffered through hundreds of turns of "We yearn to join our motherland" only because the AI had, like, a warrior and a worker running around that I couldn't find.

(I finally did kill them, though it took me forever to chase down the worker, which gave me an enormous sense of satisfaction.)

Did you have war  in your cities because one scout was alive somewhere?

Yeah it can be annoying. I only play with it sometimes. I like to role play my empire and to be a proper empire and that means you have to rule over other peoples. It can be bad when trying to run the nationhood civic because you need at least 10 % culture in the city. But the Kill everything option is fun once in a while...

This causes issues for the AI as well. As far as I can tell, the AI will never bother hunting down the last few units of the enemy Civ. This also tends to lead to the two AI teams never signing a peace treaty, and since the AI only will have one war going at a time... it leads to the AI just sitting around. I like the idea of the option, but it doesn't really work out too well.

True, true... The more I think about it, the less appealing it seems. I wish firaxis would fix it. It could of been a great option. They always make peace with me and capitualate. Then they get to be my private army.

I didn't have any ongoing combat losses, so I don't recall there being much war weariness.

Just to emphasize, I was only playing with it on because that was one of the required settings for the game. Otherwise, it's not something I'd ever be inclined to turn on.

War weariness does slowly fade if nothing happens in the war. I think it is a flat -1 per turn, so it can take a while.

I also seem to recall that at some point a patch did change the mechanics so that non-combat units that can't found cities don't keep a civ alive - workers, spies, missionaries, and corporate executives all come to mind. I'm not sure if BtS now rules out units that are not allowed to attack (scouts, explorers, machine guns) or that can't kill (catapults and such), but it might.

Hmm, I've never tried the "must destroy all cities and units" option. Can cities be gifted to civs with no cities?

I would love some sort of "a civs last city is lost doesnt mean that all the people from that civ magically become your people", and RCK can do that to a limit...

The problem isnt so much about the spy as a well organized counterespionage can reveal spies plus the spies will eventually try a mission and be lost (since no city to return to).

The real problem is the Great Spy. He cannot be spotted, and wont do missions. Only sollution is WB. Huge bug from Firaxis IMO.

AFAIK it is still every single unit including civilians that has to be wacked.

Yep. If they still have culture from that civ they can be granted independence or gifted to that civ.
