A few months back I decided to usher in Civilization IV by conquering as much land as I possibly could. I started as America in the middle, and back in the BC conquered (well almost) my first opponent, the Russians with swordsmen. Then I sat and built up my civilization, knowing that only real conquests occur after you get Calvary.
So around 1780 I exploded, destroying egypt to the north and India to the south almost overnight. Then I got tanks, and the rest all allied against me in a war. It ended up being beneficial to me because I was able to defend in my cities and destroy their armies, then have a massive counter-offensive that destroyed them all. Around the 1900's turns took like 15 minutes each, I almost went insane. I couldn't bring myself to spend eight hours to prep an assault on the other continents, so I just nuked them. it says on the map they have cities, but the continents are covered and fallout and the cities each have a population of 2-4.
In the end I won by culture, not conquest. I was dissapointed. =/
