Have you ever had a tremendous game where everything went right, no mistakes, great economy, awesome army..and then, the computer itself declares war on you?

I was playing a 4 Civ Tiny Full Random map(I always go Full Random) on Regent and I picked the Babylonians, just because they're the best. I get a great starting spot..4 wheats, plains, a river and two nearby gold veins. I quickly throw up three cities, build an impressive army, get the Colossus and Oracle, and after a few more turns I end up with 8 cities with great shield production after micro. The other civs are the Aztecs, Iroquios and the Americans. The world is divided into two main continents divided by water and I take over half of mine while Abe takes over half of his. The Aztecs are floundering as is the Iroquois. Abe declares war on them and easily takes them out. About three turns after, the Aztecs declare war on me. Big mistake!! At about this time I have my Knights which the Aztecs fear. I decide to call Abe in on the fun and together we wipe them from the face of the Earth.

Now it's just me and Abe and we each have our own continents, owning about 50% of the world each. I'm about 200 pts ahead in score and we're even in power. I get the Musketmen up, then Cavalry and Galleons soon follow to protect my seaside cities. What happened next would start the powder keg. As part of our alliance against the Aztecs, I gave the Americans chivalry, saltpeter, and some gold. Lincoln lands 4 Knights and two Riflemen on the southern tip of my continent. Two turns later, they're all dead. He immediately calls for a peace treaty, which I accept, but not after taking some gold and luxuries from him. From 1600 AD to 2045, the bloodshed continued, on and off, due to the fact that the Americans were in Awe of my culture, and all the wars they started. By this time, neither one of us launch a full attack on the other. My cavalry and infantry were holding up and I landed my first GL, who vanished a few turns later from an infantry onslaught.

At 2048..I go to my Military Advisor screen, and suddenly:

Civ 3 has caused an error and needs to be closed down.

NOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Two turns away from the game ending, the game crashed!! What luck! I was so POd knowing, or at least, thinking, that I'll never have a game like that again. It was a LOOOOONG game and I was ahead by more than 300 pts. :( Why? Why?

PS: I didn't have autosave on

Sounds like a fun game :) Tough break; all I can say is don't EVER turn Autosave off! That's the only time I use Autosave, and I have had to use it a few times.

Keep it on; hope you get a good one again :)

You inspired me to try a Tiny map, though, thank you :)

Sam

I can't believe anyone would play the game without Autosave on.

After every game I save, reload, auto save, whatever, clearing them off the hard drive to me is a pain in the neck. Yeah I know it only takes a minute or so to do, but it's annoying. :)

Anyway, I put the auto save back on

It's a lesson learnt. :)

Always play with autosave on. Learned it the hard way like you did in my 2nd or 3rd game. Civ3 is not as stable as it'd be yet.

Also always save constantly.

Poor you! My sympathies!

I always save over the same name (1.sav) @ endturn, thus I never have that problem. And I alos do not have thousands of old saves cluttering my HD! :)

I would never play a game without saving every few turns, even with autosave on. There's just too much you can lose otherwise. You played a game up to 2048 and never saved even once? Even on a tiny map, that's a marathon game of Civ3! Though it looks like you were going to win a histograph victory, which is somewhat questionable as a win.

Sulla: why is it questionable?????? If I don't want to conquer, don't want to go spaceship, don't want to sabotage and deprive of land all others, don't want to buy a cheesy UN victory, well???????? Why not histo?????? After all, building a civilization is the aim, and you might do very well without winning any other way!

Yeah I went straight through without saving. I do that because I know I'm going to have time to finish the game. The reason being that I got up at 3:30 AM because the college idiot next door was throwing a party and making all kinds of noise. And also, it was already 80 something degrees out here in Vegas, so I figure I'd get up and play. The game was about...4 hrs or so long, maybe more.

I didn't want a Histo win, I ahead about 1100 points and change while Abe had about 850. His army outmatched my own just in size, not any more advanced then my own. I knew if I declared war I would've been dead where I stood. Histos to me are a last ditch effort to win, but it's still a win. I'd much rather go Domination or Conquest, but I'll take it anyway I can :)
