My current Victoria game as Russia...

@phoenix-night: you can raise manpower by converting some of your pops to soldiers

Yeah, that's what I'll have to do when it's time for war. I don't want to permanently convert them to soldiers though, as I don't have enough spare pops. Most are in factories (I have a strong industry), with just a few left over in RGOs.

Re: Manpower

Colonies! Colonies! THats why Britan, Netherlands have so much manpower.

Damn those UKers, I was leading in Prestige and Military Power as the USA but in 1890 the UK declared war on me and wouldn't make peace until the end. I took all their remaining north-american provinces but still the wouldn't even offer a peace. Maybe it was because of my bb-rating of over 300
D'oh! I got a BB rating of about 250 and had thought that was bad!

However did you crank up such a number? I conquered China, Persia, Korea, SE Asia, a chunk of the Ottoman empire, Sweden and didn't even come close.

But don't worry - once you'd a huge military advantage (like my 850s military rating against the Brits' 420 something or so) over them, they won't bother you again. The boot is on the other foot.

Play for war weariness and hope the Brits succumb earlier than you. Can you grab at India? That shld be their imperial heartland; I found the Brits can a-begging for peace when my armies had taken Burma and half of India. ;)

Leave those in your industrial belt alone as your factory workers.

Grab soldier POPs fr the Caucasus, Persia, Central Asia, elsewhere. ;) You know - those producing wheat and assorted cheap stuff.

In my game, my manpower is at about 2200, and I already have 400 divisions or so. ;) My strategy was to convert many Russian, Ukrainian POPs as soldiers early in the game fr the outer regions (those with funny names); raise the divisions fr these core nationalities to the max (I have 200 Russian divisions alone); then began demobilizing them and retrained them as clerks and craftsmen when my industrial expansion moved to the outer regions fr Moskva and Saint Petersburg. Fr then on, I'd depend mainly on soldier POPs fr elsewhere mainly just to reinforce and restore lost soldiers. I'd also raise many Ukrainian, Manchu, Circassian etc etc divisions late in the game.

All in all, only one rebellion ever. A Russian unit very early in the game. How ironic.

Also remember to convert large POPs as officers - I found generals and admirals can really make a difference to the performance of my military units. I can produce a max of 2000 plus leadership points; and generate about 3 officers each month by now. ;) I have a general for each of my formation; down to individual divisional level.

I don't know how I got it so high, I wasn't all that evil IMHO :D I grabbed almost all of mexico and canada and some spanish provinces in western africa plus some british provinces around the globe. But I suspect the CSA is buggy: I got a BB for every confederate state I annexed (even though they were rightfully mind ;) )

I have no chance of getting to india since I neglected my navy and can't get my troops off the continent, so I just have to sit here and slaughter the millions of brits who try in vain to land in canada. my war weariness is way higher than the british, because I already was in a long war against spain before the brits declared war on me. now my war weariness is around 70%, I got revolts everywhere

Thanks for all the advice! :goodjob:

One question about manpower: does anybody understand how max manpower is calculated? How does defence spending change it? How is the difference in max/available manpower worked out?

I *think* and what I've read at Paradoxs forums, is that your maxpower is all the manpower in your country minus standing divisons. Def spending as it goes higher increase your monthly gain.

Thanks. :)

In my game as Belgium, I had a claim on North New Guinea, but Russia had a claim on the south. I traded I think four techs for Russia's claim, but I instantly got a massive hit to my prestige. Why?? I noticed this has happened when I've traded before...I didn't save though, because I'm not willing to take that hit, but I'd still like to able to trade...so, anybody know what's going on?

But if you get one in return there is no prestige loss.

In this game, if you make a lousy trade, it'll hit your prestige, like in RL. ;)

If you'd traded one to one, there'd be no loss to your prestige. 2 to 1 and it'll -10 prestige. And etc.

However, money won't affect this - so you can like exchange 1 tech and then add in the bucks to make up for the difference. ;)

That sounds bad.

But if the Brits are taking huge casualties (compared with yours), their war weariness shld go up at a higher rate?

The armed forces of Imperial Russia, bored after another fruitless wait for the British attack even though it's been near a decade since the end of the peace treaty, began another sweep into the far frontiers.

Despite our international disrepute at an ugly 250 or so, no nation had dare to raise her hand against the mighty Russian war machine.

In smallish actions, Aceh, Kutch, Simla, Oman were attacked and annexed. We also took over our satellites of Kashmir and Makran, and locked eyes with the British directly. Though the Dutch stole our thunder in Aceh; stealing 2 provinces under our eyes (it made no sense! I was there earlier; had higher prestige!). A reckoning would be made.

One army corps was waiting off the Danish coast (which had been reduced to the capital) for action - hopefully this would bring their allies into a war - the remnant of the former Great Power Sweden.

In the meantime, 50 steamship transports had been built or were being built in the Baltic and Artic regions... :mischief:

Waiting for battleships option...

Building 100 battleships within a 6 month range, incl 30 with destroyer escorts. :yeah:

Bad news is - it's already the middle of 1917. :( The first BBs will arrive about early-middle of 1918... And the Americans and Japanese already have some dreadnoughts (though not the British)...

My badboy rating is now at 345 (!), but nobody's picking a fight with me. :)

Well, as for my current game, I beat the Netherlands quite comprehensively, claiming a few provinces...it really damaged my country though! Massive loans and crippled my industry (what with practically my entire population fighting the Dutch)...:(

Most annoying are their colonies in the far East! I want them...at least I want to annex the Netherlands...I have no navy though...:(

Build a navy, then fetch your troops there. ;) You have 5 years to prepare for that.

I usually find the East Indies an easy campaign... though not playing as Belgium.

Surprisingly, Japan made it into the Great Power ranks; though that was because I had kicked out the Swedes and Ottomans.

Apart fr my holdings within Russia proper, also had China, Korea, parts of SE Asia, parts of India, Tibet, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Persia, parts of the Balkans, parts of the ME, Alaska, Somalia, Swahililand/Zanzibar, Greenland, Iceland and the Virgin Islands.

My best and funnest game.

Russia is fun; but very exhausting. The China war and rebellions were particularly a pain.

Got my battleships by beginning of 1920; all 130 of them with 70 in the Baltic region alone but was too lazy to launch an invasion of the British Isles. The deadline is already too tight... Russia is fun; but very exhausting. The China war and rebellions were particularly a pain.

Also in the last months of the game, France declared war on Prussia, which brought in Austria and a few German states on its side. Then Sardinia-Piedmont joined in on the French side.

And the Ottomans asked me for military access; pitied them and let them cross to reinforce Bosnia-Herzegovina which had been cut off fr their empire by my territories slicing into the Adriatic. Maybe they wanna attacked the Austrians too - the two fought a war after I'd made a large landgrab fr the Ottomans.

I was tempted to attk the Germanics, but their forces never left the Russian borders... perhaps the AI knows what's on my mind. :mischief:

Even the Brits asked me for military access... Can't think of why.

Strange, how these alternate histories work out...

Now that I think about it...

It could be that France declared war on the Germans, because I'd cultivated Russia's relationship with them till 200 (to exchange some claims, so that I can claim Somalia)... They also sent goodwill embassies to me... That could be it.

What country is that black and yellow flag?

EDIT- Double post
