In the past few weekends I've been playing Civ3 Gold on a crappy old laptop at our place up in the woods. I'm on the verge of breaking through the Monarch barrier.
I chose Brennus on a small map and focused on hooking up iron first. I had 4 solid cities before I was already boxed in by the AI. Then I started pumping out the Gallic Soldiers and started taking AI cities. My biggest concern during this phase was to avoid being "flanked" so to speak - where - as you're fighting one AI player, another is settling in the voids you're created. So I also kept a steady stream of settlers to block off the other AI.
I also never let up in the conquest. My other big fear is cities flipping back again (often with your best army still in them). So I wanted to completely crush them as quickly as possible.
Eventually, I was startled to see that I had taken most of the known world. I wiped out two civilizations and shared the remainder of the world with Isabelle and Elizabeth. Isabelle was the next largest civ.
I have to go now, so I'll finish this later.
