Greetings all, first post, new thread spam etc. Thought I would share some details of my game and amusing screenshots to accompany.
First of all though, a technical question. The game sometimes goes 'rainbow noise' on me (lots of crazy colours on the edges of objects), and then crashes afterwards. It seems to do this almost immediately in DX10/11 mode, and occasionally in DX9 mode. I have a GEForce 9800GT, Windows 7 and the driver is nvidia 8.17.12.5896. Advice would be welcome.
Anyway, my game. I started off by accidentally going for 'Play Now!' which chose at random for me, the Greeks - who I had planned to play anyway, so my fate was sealed. Then I found the graphics bug. So a bit of restarting later I setup the game correctly with a standard size world on Prince. Athens is founded in the middle of the largest forest known to man. It's forest in every direction except north, there's a sea. If only I was the Iroquois. Still, let's set to work on a scout. Some exploring later and I find Hanoi to the south, Monaco to the north east. The sea is looking to be inland, sucks.
Sadly then I find myself pinned in by two barbarian camps to the north east and north west. I watch wonders get built in unknown places all over as I deal with them and eventually found Sparta and meet the Ottomans. Some development later and Corinth is founded. The Ottomans have been cagy this whole time, not agreeing to any pacts, trading briefly but refusing to restart a deal. I know they're going to be trouble. Lo and behold they found Ankara in a completely stupid place (this is one thing I have a complaint about - later on another Civ founds a city on the border of Athens in such a way that it will never gain any land which is just silly). Also, Ankara is invisible.
So, TO WAR! My unique unit advantage really plays off well here as I take Ankara and move north, but by this stage, wow, he knows he's beaten. He yields Edirne to me, gold, Gold and gold (per turn). Impressive. I still station my army on his border, he's dodgy. He founds some more cities, one is still silly close I think but hey. He asks me if I'm going to attack him so I just go for it, yes, let's have more war. So Monaco, Sidon (north of him) and I defeat the Ottomans, keeping Istanbul as a puppet and the rest are burnt to the ground. Edirne gets annexed properly at this point, but has almost no production and so much food it's just a city of
- I'll deal with that later.
Culturally I'm doing well at this point, I've completed Piety and almost Liberty. Monaco has really helped, but the other states on this continent (all mine now) are militaristic, ugh. Still, let's make friends with them anyway and start on Patronage. I finally get some wonders. Arabia turns up in a caravel and is very pleasant, we get on great. I launch my own expedition and find Rome, and a strange red rock.
Best graphical glitch ever. Poor Monaco is also in a quandry. It borders the inland sea, not the external one. It'll never get to give me pearls. I can't fishing boat it myself. I can't give it the boat. Rare event I know, but if units can go on water can't work boats hop onto land?
Meanwhile Arabia colonises what I haven't. A sensible city in the north, a silly one in the south. I explore Russia. Now I know who has been conquering all those city states I've been notified about. The remaining states declare war on her and ask for help. I.. decide it's best to wait and see, and she even asks me if I'm bothered that she hates them all, so I diplomatically tell her to get on with it. Maybe if she's technologically backwards I can free them later. That's as far as I've got for now. One more bug I'll note is that 'unmet players' can become friends with a city state, and you get a notice. You find out who they are easily though by clicking on the state - it tells you who their best friend is. Overall, I'm really enjoying the game, I'm sure that with a little polish in terms of UI, notices, ticky boxes for people to use it'll be fantastic. It's not been too easy or difficult so far, though I don't recommend annexing a giant food city (60 turns to get back that happiness with a courthouse!). I might not understand the economy quite enough either as I've hit the red a few times!
(On preview I see that the screenshots have interesting white bits - strange artefact of PrintScreen or diagnostic of my graphic issues?)
