I rolled this little "gem" of a start and just had to share it with everyone. If you play the later save then there are 2 events you should be aware of.

A. The herbal remedy event occured when my city was pop1...so what the heck, nothing to lose. So now in addition to Mehmed being expansive I get an extra +2:healthy: on top of that.
B. All melee units get the cover promotion. And genghis is in striking distance to the SW. And we have TWO sources of copper very close.

Tech path was mining->BW and popped pottery from a hut. I stopped one turn into Masonry in case noone else is a great wall junkie like myself. The map is huge marathon so barbs are definately going to be an issue. i would prefer all my units headed SW towards Khanville rather than protecting my improvements. I will scoot them outside my borders to grab some exp from barb archers. I did mention the cover event :).

Below is my dot map. I am going to grab the super gem city first to keep Imp Khan from grabbing it then the western copper city. The city to the north has no food specials but does have 3 floodplains. I am going to settle all the cities first THEN go after Khan. I may go towards the eastern dye/copper site after the gems if I reveal a close neighbor to the east.

The above is what i plan to do with the gem city. It is hammer poor but the two bananas will mean it is whipable. With guilds and caste I will probably need 2-3 workshops in order to get some of the more expensive buildings without having to whip away too many cottage working folks.

The settings for the map are Emp difficulty Marathon speed Huge size. with no vassals and tech brokering off. The vassal system is broken and since i am a Great Wall junkie, no tech brokering keeps me from abusing the espionage part of the game because you cannot ttrade stolen techs. I know it will be a fairly long game but with a start like this it should be a long FUN game. There are atleast 5 strong city spots in a nice ring around the capital and their BFC's mesh almost perfectly. I am hoping for some seafood to the NW for a good naval production city. AH and IW are next up. then maybe writing and math for the libraries and hamman. The only thing lacking is a good GP farm. I am hoping Gengis will have something nice in that capacity. His capital looks like it has a lot of plains forests. and it doesn't look like it is on a river for health and levees. i may raze it and move it 1 NW to grab a floodplain and the gold as well.

enjoy if you want to. I have attached the 2995BC save. unfortunately I was dinking about with another map in WB testing Boudica Guerilla3 gallics and thus lost the 4000B.C. save.

Not a lot of fans so far, but I'm playing it :D.

To 10 AD. Screw rushing.

Spoiler :
We had a settler in queue. This is pretty similar to how I'd open so I just roll with it. Without IW, the jungle to the south is off limits for settling. 2nd city gets placed somewhere I can actually use it.

This isn't the kind of map you screw around on with barbs. GW it is.

I get alphabet via beeline:

I can really abuse the NTB aspect that is on haha. Also, this lets me trade for IW although it turns out the AIs got to it slowly so my jungle cities were useless for a bit :(.

I keep expanding. It is important to get at least 8 cities:

Do we get a gspy? No we do not get a gspy. I ran 2 scientists in city 2, and even though a monsoon (next to a lake this far inland?!) knocked out my library, I rebuilt it and got a scientist. Taking a look at my capitol it's not hard to guess how I might use it.

Monarchy becomes a priority so I head that way. I also grab city #7 - a barb city.

I grab CoL first - not because I really care about the religion, but because CoL is good trade bait even on immortal, and I want CS ASAP.

I settle my 8th city.

And I pick up #9 in an interesting way:

He got way too close to my capitol just before a border pop. So, I get a halfway ok city for no cost. He settles past that between 4 of my cities anyway, which is annoying but I'll live since we share religions.

Beakers look pretty good after CS:

I get philosophy off scientist #2 also:

There have been some wars between religious blocks. Khan is in war mode but his WE is SB which I can't see. I have construction and some cats if khan gets fresh. As more people get feudalism I can trade for that but for now cat/axe will probably hold off whatever khan uses, though it's doubtful he hits me. Everyone else is pleased that's near me, and they have WEs. I should be good for now. Even if I'm not...I just need to protect the capitol. I can whip any other city to hell and not flinch :p.

To 945 AD.

I'm not sure I feel like playing this out. It went so well it's laughable. I'll see how I feel later :p

Spoiler :
Well, I switched into pacifism a bit to get one last GS, which I used to bulb lib directly...

I take the very rare to take gunpowder. I've been building cats, so now all I need are the jans.

GK declares and kills Mansa, and he's big and heathen. He's also #2 in tech and on my border. Basically, he has to go, so go he shall.

He flanks a knight/keshi/treb/cat/mace stack up along the east and takes my SE city. Oh well. I march over there, kill it, and proceed through his entire territory, including MM's former territory. He got engineering pretty early in the war and put castles up. I stopped bombarding and just suicided 2-3 cats per city, where the jans could frequently overwhelm anything left easily after that. I had a medic III guy in each stack (I split them), so it wasn't hard to heal after fighting especially due to marathon.

The end result is not pretty for GK, but it's gorgeous for the ottomans:

NTB grinds the AIs into snails. This is probably the more advanced continent, too :p!

@ TMIT:
Spoiler :
How can you allow the AI's to have so much gold? go get all their gold already? you can easily get 4K gold right now... Also no reason to not run 100% slider for the rest of the game(while taking out the AI one after another). But yes marathon with janisaries is kinda abuse...

The NTB does slow down the AI a bit. When i generated the map I didn't realise just how strong the starting location was. Not just the capital but the surrounding areas as well.

Tech path was mining->BW and popped pottery from a hut. I stopped one turn into Masonry in case noone else is a great wall junkie like myself.

Masonry? Dude: You. Intervention. Now.

How could you resist the Iron Working beeline?

Re the OP: No farms AT ALL in the gemmed city? <-curiosity question; I am still learning the art of a strong cottage economy.

Masonry? Dude: You. Intervention. Now.

When I saw the copper in "reddot" city. I decided to settle there first. To give me time to chop a monument and let the border pop to get the copper. In the time it took to finish the settler AND a settler for the triple gem city I had managed to research both masonry and Iron Working. I farmed one of the grassland southwest of the cows when Istanbul got it's second border pop so I could quickly grow and whip a monument then a granary.

I took a different approach than TMIT and beelined Mathematics for the Hamman rather than Alphabet. Then construction for colloseums and cats. With a colloseum and hamman plus the gems. The happy cap was 8 in my cities. fairly soon. Julius Caser is actually to the SE so I wanted cats in case he came knocking with Prats.
Rather than chase liberalism, I beelined Monarchy and Metal casting. Traded Metal Casting for Alphabet and Sailing after I researched fishing in 3 turns. Then I used the Great Spy from The great wall to steal CoL, Calender, HBR, aesthetics and eventually Civil service. While the AI was researching these for me I went Machinery-Guilds-Gunpowder then started on engineering while building Jans. Used cats and Jans totake the cities i found desireable from GK, Then pushed JC around like the little punk he is taking his nicer cities. Once I had a nice stack of trebs and some pikes i clobbered Justinian. At which point I got bored. My production was insane in the former Mongol and roman lands. And my beakers from istanbul, yellow city (3dye, 1 gems and loads of cottages) and the triple gem city(where i moved my capital, built an academy and dropped into Bureaucracy) were off the charts. I had a big fat happy shrine city courtesy of justinian. It was one of the easiest games i ever played on emp.

Heh...all that differing early tech priority, and we still both revert to cat/jan smackdown :p. We even both got shrines! Though mine came from MM (who was killed by GK).

Any chance of a few screenshots of Istanbul's city screen and the gem city's city screen near the end? Would be a few nice illustrations of commerce heaven... :D

Wait, he gave you the city? What? Why does that never happen to me?

Happens to me all the time. March up to a city while you're at war and kill all of the defenders and the AI civ just GIVES you the city!

It's almost an exploit, but the AI bonuses keep it from being a completely broken mechanic.
