My next game I was toying with the idea of playing a civilization kinda based off how I see America. I want good solid borders with cities that produce very efficiently, and if push comes to shove I will campaign against the other civs, but not take their cities... sorta using the 'punishment war' scheme.

So any suggestions as to the civ to pick? I plan on going for space race, as I have yet to win the game like that. Should I play archipelago or continents? land percentage? Any strategies or suggestions would be helpful... meanwhile - I'm off to watch braveheart. $$ someone in another thread inspired me.

My suggestion: Wait until PTW comes out and you can create a scenario (not that you can't with 1.29). It seems that you want to have a preset #1 (almost dominant) civ and no other civs more than 2/3 of your power/strength.

If you start from scratch, you could end up NOT being the #1 civ at all. I would recommend continents (world map?), but that's what I always play. ...

(Sorry, not much help, was I)

No thats not what I had in mind, I intend of course to become the most powerful Civ however all my games up until involve me owning 80% of the map by the time the game ends... my turns become long and boring. My idea was to control through diplomacy and punishment campaigns. I like continents a lot however I also have this nice mod (thanks player1) that upgrades naval strength. It would be good for setting other civs straight on archipelago.

anyways...more suggestions would be appreciated.

Well I decided on an archipelago map as the persians. Its great except I share an island with the zulus. Now I was fortunate enough to find a passageway that led to a resource rich island so I blocked it off by placing a warrior to guard it.

Just as I was moving my settlers to propagate the island Zulus magically moved a settler and protection unit right over the passageway in front of my warrior and plopped down a city.

Now I am left with a bad choice.. either I keep my troops there and declare war (a war which I am not quite ready to fight) and have a bad mark against my name. Or I move and give up my treasure island.

See unfortunately the computer demands I move or I declare war (very stupid since I was on the territory before them). It gives me no options, its too early for either of us to have Literature by about 10 turns. This is a very aggressive and cheap move on the AI's part. It wouldnt aggravate me so much if they didnt already KNOW what was beyond my warrior, but since they do...

Any suggestions?

I think a commerical civ would work out nicely in that style. Personally, I like France - commerial and industrial.
