my personal civilization guides civ4 bts

Alright I do apologize for the Leader mix-up first of all. secondly no I am not trolling, I am simply putting in my "two cents" about civ IV. thirdly yes I do play the leader I judge I am currently playing a very fun game as Saladin of Arabia. Fourthly I obviously messed up on using civFanatics as a small guide so I didn't have to slow down my computer too much by running the game. Fifthly the stars were how I would gauge the abilities of that civilization in the selected area if you want me to give an explanation I will include it in my next civ post (most likely Persia). Sixthly I am doing this because I have been on civ fanatics for a while and noticed the missing strategy guides for 3/4 of the civs.

Camel archers have 25% withdrawal chances.

False

Unique unit for Arabia; Replaces Knight
Immune to first strikes
Doesn't receive defensive bonuses
Can withdraw from combat (15% chance)
Flank attack versus Catapults and Trebuchets

Does the Camel Archer get a first strike in vanilla or something?

Can somebody tell me what this means? Does he use this forum as a sort of notepad where he writes his notes for himself, so that he doesn't have to consult the game but can consult the Inet if he wants to look up something? Is this really what he says?

Actually I have no idea if there are any strategy guides missing, I haven't read the whole forum. Have maybe once thought, that Civ is about playing the map, and not the leader? If you know how to play the map, you can play any leader, there simply is no need for leader-specific threads. There are tons of game-specific threads, top ranked UUs, top ranked UBs, all these threads exist already, what you are doing here is not only not special, it's annoying!

I'm going to replay you, I'm selling cars now, but you want a boat. I answer to you "The Mercedes Benz is a very good car, the BMW is a very bad car" . You say "but I'm here to buy a boat" . I say "I know, but I've noticed that there is a lack for Cars at your place, I'll tell you, the Mercedes has ... ... ... and the BMW has ... ... ..." now you get mad and say "I don't need a car, I have a motorbike, I have a bicycle, and I can drive with the bus" and I say "see, now the Mercedes has a star on its front, and the BMW a propeller" ...

...
..
.

This is somewhat a) Playing the map > playing the leader. b) There is already tons of information by tons of users you are ignoring c) nobody has anything of knowing something is rated a 4 or a 5 by you.

What people have something of, are:

1. At which lvl you play.
2. In which time you win.
3. Which tactics you use on that way.
4. How you adapt to the map / settings.
5. What you know, that nobody knows.

Etc.

Those are interesting things, your ratings = just not interesting, opinions are there, tons of them, nobody cares, except people tell the things I mention above with them, I'll give you another example.

China:
UU: Cho-Ku-Nu (irrelevant, because everybody knows that) , but now:
TACTIC USED TO WIN: Skip Fishing, create a GS, bulb Machinery with GS, have Cho-Ku-Nu's by 1000 BC!
Viable up to: Deity lvl.

THAT's something people are interested in, just as an example. Nobody cares if Cho-Ku-Nu's are rated a 5, or a 4, what people want to know is how to play and win a map, what tactics lead to better results, and up to which difficult lvl this is relevant!

Now please, think about that. And somebody plz explain the 1st sentence I quoted to me, I have to think I got that one wrong, because if I'm right, I'm gonna kill a kitten  . You don't want me to kill a kitten, don't you? :D .

Geez..he seems inexperienced, but he does not deserve being "taken down" for making this thread. Raise an eyebrow, maybe help him out or give tips what he could do, but this forum should be better than what this thread is turning into..

Serial - I think he means he's getting info off the site versus having the game open to check things.

The whole "stars" system is lazy, uninformative and of absolutely no help to any new players to the game. Something like that should only be used to augment a full article on the civ/leaders, but..again...really of no use.

What Serial, I and others are trying to get at, is that if you don't put in any effort to make your guides useful and meaningful, there's really no point in making them. It's fine that it is your own "opinion" or "experience". People may not agree with you, but if you explain yourself and provide reasonable examples or context it should stand on its own. In its current form from what you have provided so far, it is just all blowing air.

It's also very important to get your facts correct - outside the "opinion". Mixing up leaders, basic factual info and even the version of the game you are playing is just an invitation to the flak you are currently receiving. Heck, you still haven't fixed your Arabia "guide", although I would call it anything but a guide in its current form.

It's not that folks don't want you to write up your own guide, they just want you to do it right and put up a little more effort.

By the way, this thread should probably be moved to the sub-forum.

Believe me, done that, really tried, and really tried to be nice. Read my post again, and you won't find that I'm taking him down, what I'm doing is waking him up.

And: :agree: to what lymond says, except the fact that my name is not Serial  :D .

I will take all comments Into consideration and will resume posting some time in mid July with "proper" civ guides.

By all means try again. Keep youself open to many varients of the game and try different types of tactics. Read what has been written and if you disagree, then make a specific example backing your claim.

But most of all, enjoy this mad game.;)
