Naming Areas on the Map

I think that it would be cool to be able to name places on the map, like mountain ranges, river, oceans etc. U would be able to see the name on the ingame map, kinda like in SIMCITY 4: Rush Hour!

Here is my first thread about this, there is a good picture with a example of this on the second page: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showt...&threadid=71922

I like the idea of letting the first civ to the location name it. This would also give you some idea just how far other civs have explored. Heck even the astronauts got to name landmarks on the moon.

I like to see this too, mainly for one reason that hasn't been mentioned yet. Spying. It would be pretty useful if you could get a spy to report to you about so and so moving troops through such and such place. Or so and so winning a war/battle in such and such place. Problem is that the AI builds crap loads of units, so you can't expect the reports to be to reliable. But it would still be useful. Just thought about how it would be nice to hear about how some Civ has Subs operating in "<insert name here> Sea/Ocean" I hate sitting there and not being told just how much damage some Civ is doing to another Civ. But if this is implemented I think it should come with pre-generated names also, ones based off of the Earth (Rocky Mountians, Nile River and so forth) And if you want to change the name just double click on the name. A random name generator would be cool also.

Also, how many similar tiles would there have to be. For example, would 5 mountains be enough to make up a mountain range, and be called "The xxxx Mountians"? 7? 10? I think between 7-10 should be enough.

A little off topic, but similair is this idea: I would also like the ability to divide my territory into provinces, with those provincial borders clearly seen on the map. Each city in a province is closely tied to each other, with the provincial capital having the greatest influence (civil wars would be much easier to implement with a system that allowed provinces/states to be created).

So an intelligence report would go something like this - "American submarines sunk a Chinese destroyer in the South China Sea" - so you would see this and know what the other civs are doing. I like the idea about the provinces, and would this help with keeping corruption lower? Each provincial capital could act as a sort of less effective Forbidden Palace or something

Here is a example that was orignally posted by MSTK:

This feature would not take up very much memory and it would not be hard to implement. I think that it would add to the replay value and the customizablilty.

I think this is a great idea. And I like the option of province/states

I hava been thinking about this feat before. It`s working in Europa Universalis, why woudn`t it in CivIV?

I find I do this kind of thing anyway when naming cities. Mostly, when I can be bothered I have areas of the map named in my head just to give the game more story value. Naming cities is the only way we can do this right now. It all helps me to remember where the hell the city is and it definitely adds colour to the game, gives it more of a narrative. Your example picture illustrates this.

This can all be optional of course. People don't have to use the feature same as they don't have to play every game as a mass regicide. The text that appears should be very faint so as not to clutter the map.

Although I like the idea of the spy reports I feel I may turn that off after a while as it would slow the game. I fully agree we need more info through the intelligence agency but I feel that might be a bit too much!

I like the idea but personally, I think it would clutter up the map. I would probably use it the first two or three games and then turn it off.

I'll bet you (and myself) would use it more then that it if actually had a purpose, beyond cosmetic, which i hope it will.

I'd bet I'd use it if it did have a purpose beyond cosmetic, but alas, I can not think of one.

For me, it probably follow the same pattern as naming cities. My first couple of games, I named all my cities and then realized it just was not worth the bother.

In SimCity 4, you have the option of turning placenames on and off.

Also, perhaps if you check the terrain info, it could tell you what this mountain is...

And in there could be a sign in Histogram: In 256 AD Russians have won the Battle at river Don against English!

They sort-of had that in the Mesopotamia scenario, because all of the forests were named "Cedars of Lebanon" or something like that.

Make it a feature you can turn off. Perhaps add it so that you could name something already named by another civ - you'd see your name and could view alternate names. Or, maybe you could have the option of naming a regional area once your borders touched/included the terrain.

I'd like this ability. It'd add a heckuva lot more story value to the game, something which I like. I'm not a bean counter or a warmongerer.. gimme some cool features I can play around with. then I'll be happy!

I'm all for it but the problem might be who names areas.

IMHO, this should be something like planting a sign or something, like in sim city 2000.

It could simply be for intelligence reports if you REALLY wanted a practical application (I don't see why things need practical applications, myself). It would just be something like when a major war starts, you could get a briefing like "Sir, we've recieved word of a war between Babylon and Persia! There's tremendous fighting in the Zagros Mountains, and it looks like the Persians are advancing"

You could then have a link which takes the map to that area.
