Since i'm the new Cartographer I believe my atlas have to be more precise so I inquire citizens to vote for the future names of the 3 oceans around us since they are the most important for now to be named

I believe that this thread was created incorrectly, as there was no nomination thread with seconds on these names. I call a locking or equivalent.

There were no secondings, and the Naming Initiative does include geographical names
Naming Initiative said:
Other geographical features, including, but not limited to: continents, mountain ranges, oceans, forests, and plains may also be named. Nomination threads for such features may be posted by any interested individual, and would follow the same procedure as in II.

Naming Initiative

See this thread. But I do think it would be better to have two separate polls to deal with the two names.

there are actually 7 options for 2 names, meaning all the statistical possibilities are there. why make two threads with 3 options if I can do 1 with 7 options. This is actually two poll in one for the reason I dont want to over fill the poll sub forums with naming. Since only 4 people participated at the discussion of naming them I thought nobody was really interested. Now a poll and everybody is unhappy ?!

I suggest people go in the discussion thread to propose names for the geographical elements to come.

"I just wanna see the results".

People vote no and cry because nothing was seconded...yet no one suggest names.

There will be plenty of things to name. I cant understand why people doesnt want to give name to anything. Can he people who voted no please explain their decision to help me do my job as cartographer?

I'd be happy to explain my vote, this may be a bit of a long post and I apologize for that.

I believe you joined the DG just after the first attempt to name our capital, so I'll start off by telling you about how that happened. I'm a new player and the first thing I wanted to push for in the demo game was the name of our capital, I was not satisfied with Karakorum. I started a nomination thread and after a few days posted a poll.

I basically got the same result you have, mos people voted none of the above. And a few complained that the poll had been posted too quickly. As this was my first attempt at making something happen in the demo game I was discouraged by this result and was actually close to angry with the people who voted none of the above after spending days not posting suggestions in the nomination thread.

As you know our capital has received a name, NoneOfTheAbove. This is a very important and meaningful name in my personal view because it commemorates my failed polling attempt. The thing I learned from this experience is that decisions in this game are often very slow and thought out. People want to wait to see exactly what they're dealing with before they make a decision.

Sometimes this is useful, in the case of the capital name it gave time for someone to come up with the inspired idea of actually naming our city none of the above. Sometimes time breeds good results, and I've converted to that way of thinking.

For the issue at hand, it seems premature to name the oceans IMO, partially because we can't even be sure if they are oceans, very easily these bodies of water could be bays or gulfs, thus leading to very embarrassing names on your maps (see Hudson bay, that's not a bay Mr. Hudson:lol: ). Also I believe that time will show us good names for them, events will occur in these oceans, we will meet other civs on them, and possibly fight great battles there, which we might commemorate in the name of the seas.

My suggestion would be to use simple placeholder names on your maps, most likely related to the seas location with respect to us, East Sea, possibly translate one or two into different languages for a bit of flavor, Ost See for example. Also while cartographer is not an official position, you may be able to do some simple naming on your own initiative. Our second city Falcon's Haven was named in violation of the naming initiative, by a designated player acting on his own will. Yet it's an interesting name, and people seem to like it, so we really don't care. I figure similar things would happen with your names for geographical locations.

PS. No offense to falcon, I also quite like the name and frankly I would hate to see a city stuck with the name "City #1" as might happen were the naming initiative followed.:)

i dont see the problem of changing names. Or even changing the name from Roman Ocean to Roman bay if we discover its smaller than we thought...isnt all maps are about! Discovering farther and renaming...

Colombus designated the inhabitants of the region he discovered Indians because he thought he was in India. Do we still name our continent China? no thanks to Waldseemüler. Shall we name rivers before ocean?

I must say grant that I always voted for you in all the polls. I also dont understand poster that i've never seen here coming in the thread to post and/or voting no.

Well, just to let you know, I still expect a naming poll for Falcon's Haven. Was getting tired of referring to NotA as just "The Capital" and felt the same thing would happen with our second city. While I would kinda like it to remain Falcon's Haven, I take no offense if the citizens decide that they would rather have the Golden Horse name that was also proposed. I'm surprised though that there still has not been a naming poll for the city yet, and may end up posting the poll myself.

Sure. It's the signal-to-noise ratio. When we get some good names with minimal discussion I will vote yes. When we get mediocre names after much discussion, I will vote no. I will say:

- I kinda like the Equus aurum or whatever grammatical variant survives

- I accept the DP installing a placeholder name of his/her choosing

wrong thread would say...we're not talking cities here...

Yes I didn't intend to imply anything other than that, you're an honorable player, the placeholder names suggested in the in initiative are nice, but I think this would be a much worse game if every initiative were followed to the letter, leeway is necessary for good decisions.

I'm thinking to put some * to all the names with a note at the bottom

N.B. all names with * are only names for better comprehension and are not official...or maybe I should publish unofficial maps lol.

I'm feeling like Martin Luther King...I had a dream but it seems no one understand me and are putting sticks in my wheels

I think that is an excellent idea. Your maps are nice and if you want to put names on them, go right ahead. Maybe that will sway some votes towards making them official.

thanks for your support. i'm waiting for the court to give their decision. if they refuse i'll ask Methos for the creation of a geographical naming comitee. :)
