Naming Stuff Thread

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the that in the traditional Korean naming system, the cognomen is said first. Thus: Kim Il-Sung has a son named Kim Jong-Il. Whereas, a 'western' translation would name them Il-Sung Kim and Jong-Il Kim. The Dear Leader's eldest son would be, Jong-Nam Kim. In Korean, his son is Kim Jong-Nam (tho' he's not likely to become the next Great Comarade). Koreans have 2 first names, hyphenated usually (in anglicization) to indicate that they are inseparable.

Therefore, Kim Hyun Sub, or Cha Bum Kun.

Of course, I don't think we're going to offend too many ehtnic Koreans here, as this is not meant to be a true to life simulation. However, it's always nice to learn something new about all the other people who we share the planet with ;)

Therefore, Kim Hyun Sub, or Cha Bum Kun.

Correct. It's necessary to identify the family name precisely. At least for Cha Bum Kun (Korean style) - he has a son Cha Du-ri (also soccer player).
So definetely Cha is the family name.
So I think we could call him Bum Kun and now have another in hand (Du-ri) if we are running out of names... :D

Need some ship names:

We could name them after cities (The Chamber/The Admiralty - perhaps TC The Chamber (TC standing for the The Council)

We could call curraghs Chamsuri I, II, etc - the Chamsuri class are modern day coastal patrol ships.

How about famous ship names "simply" translated to Korean? :hmm:

I mean, names like Bounty, Mayflower, Santa Maria should have pendants in every language, right?

Anybody care to find out the Korean translations in an online dictionary? :mischief:

edit: I tried and I translated "Bounty": 국어: :ack: :dunno:
the online dict is here
I did not find a way to get this in latin letters. :(

Any better ideas how to name our ships?

well, we *could* configure our browser to handle the fonts, then patternmatch to romanized alphabet.

I need a name now - I'm gonna pick Chamsuri for this curragh until we figure out a better name :)

I tried to render the "Bounty" posted above into romanized letters, I've no idea at all if I'm right: Gukeong

But I think that sticking to more readily accessible terms is preferable.

Here's a guy who seems to know some stuff. Maritime Asia

We're about to settle the Green Dot City and need a name. So far we have The Chamber, The Admiralty and The Treasury. We should continue the series. What will Green Dot's purpose be? Producing workers or warriors? I suggest The Home Office for the former and The Barracks for the latter. Any other ideas? We'll need many more city names.

A possibility for the worker pump could be the hive.

The Comb (similar to the Hive)
The Factory
The Institute
The Farm
The College
The Cabinet
The Archive (wierd pun there!)
The Warehouse
The Executive Branch
The Legislative Branch
The Judicial Branch
The Data Room

Sure you didn't mean "The Womb" on the first one?
Suits the worker pump.

The Archive(s) could be the research centre though

We've got The Hive, The Comb, The Womb and The Archive as possibilities.

Lets get consensus before Wotan sends us the save!!

I vote "The Hive!"

The Hive gets my vote as well.
